PostPosted: 23:05 - 30 Jul 2011    Post subject: Recommend me a cheap breakdown service Reply with quote

Long story short, I've just done some work on my bike and I'm not really 100% confident in the work I did but I need to make some long journeys soon so I'd like to be covered in case my bike breaks down. I'll be phoning my insurers on Monday to see if I can tack some recovery onto my policy otherwise I'll be getting some independent breakdown.

I really don't need much, I just want recovery to my house if my bike breaks down. I don't need home start and I won't be going abroad on my bike any time soon (Sad) but it does need to be cheap because I'm a poor student The world's smallest violin player, just for you! Laughing

So can anyone recommend a cheap recovery service?

Have a look at this:
https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/

I'm with them but have not had to use it yet.
I doubt breakdown cover through insurance would be a good deal, they just use every opportunity to make more money out of you.

The AA
costs me a tenner a month for 2 of us and onward travel cover, free hire car or hotel etc

No hassle from them because your oil filter is non standard and you haven't got your service history with you etc

Should be about £7 a month for a get you home type cover

+1. Never had any issues with claiming/payouts (had it for 2 separate years and claimed once both years Laughing ), its just a simple form.

Can you not get it bundled into your insurance policy? Presume the last thing the underwriter wants is your bike at the side of the road while you walk to town to organise a tow.

Mine is, but NZ and UK insurance have different policies.

Yeah I just looked at the AA thing and it looks good at £7 a month for recovery in any vehicle that you're driving or a passenger in, I think I may just go for that! I'll still look into the auto aid breakdown thing as well though Thumbs Up

I use https://www.startrescue.co.uk/

It costs me £32 a year for home-start and UK breakdown/recovery.

I like them because they have an iPhone app which automatically sends your location so you don't have to say:

"I'm on an unmarked B road near Buxton, close to a field."

Thumbs Up

I've got this which is cheap for a reason: https://motorbreakdownrecovery.com/

You have to pay £35 for each call out so if you use it more than once a year it works out more expensive than AA/Greenflag etc

If you dont do many miles and the chance of you breaking down more than once a year seems unlikely then it might work out.

Thanks for this. I've been looking for something to replace Insurance Choice as they have refused to cover me this year due to my bike being too old.

the rac do it for 7.99 a month, it covers you for your car and bike and if you are a passenger in a vehicle, basicly its personel cover, it comes in handy

+1.

TheAA are tossers.

Also, doing it through insurance isn't so good if you have more than one vehicle - you only get cover on that one vehicle, whereas with greenflag/rac/aatossers you can cover for yourself. So even when your mate's car/bike breaks down, you can call them in - if you're there Wink

Worth noting that next-year renewals gain you nothing - my girlfriend and I swop memberships every other year. That way, we always benefit from the "first year new members discount" (significant) and get both people covered on one membership. Works out a lot cheaper.

A.

After a quick check on a cashback website it seems both the AA and RAC offer cashback which means I can get £70 worth of recovery for about £40 so that's a total bonus. I just need to choose between the two now, so any horror/hero stories of either? It looks like I'll be going for personal cover as it's only a few quid more a year with either company.

Check the small print to see which one excludes "accidents" and don't go with that one (vaguely remember it being the AA that excludes them).

Doesn't look like either of them cover accidents so it looks like swings and roundabout really.

AA can be bad, depends on the driver. Had a friend who was in his car. Due to the nature of the road, he was forced to run over a exhaust that was in the road... Holed his sump.
Called AA out, he explained to the driver what had happened and guy said sorry you have been involved in a accident......... Got back in his van saying you better contact your ins co to recover you.....

I'm with autoaid, claimed after I binned it in the ice 2 days after I signed up - they arranged for someone to recover the bike home. Paid up within a few days.

Highly recommend them Thumbs Up .

I can recommend GEM Motoring Assist. Been with them many years now, broke down a fair few times and never had any problems with them. Thumbs Up
