 Posted: 12:57 - 23 Aug 2011 Post subject: Valve Clearances ? |
 |
|
Maybe a question for 'The Workshop' forum, but I dont actually have a problem so thought I'd post here instead.
Anyway...
How do you know if you valve clearances need done on our bike?
And how often should you do this?
Obviously different bikes will require different service intervals, but I have just been quoted 2 different prices by a company for doing 2 services (one with valve clearances being done and the other price without being done).
Also how easy are these to do yourself if they were needing done?
Because the price for doing them is double the price of the normal oil and filter change?
Thanks in advance for any replies given.

What bike?
Most IL4 sportsbikes that aren't ancient specify every 16k valve clearances check - you don't know if they need doing unless you check. If they are really bad you might get a tapping noise at the top end.
Checking is easy, remove the tank and airbox, pop the valve cover and use feeler gauges to judge the clearance between cam and shim bucket. You need to turn the engine over a few times by hand and line up some marks but it is pretty simple.
Adjusting them is a pita on most new bikes as they are shim under bucket, meaning to adjust (change the shims) you need to remove the cams in order to remove the buckets. This is a pain both because it takes ages to remove, reassemble and time up and because if you do it wrong you can ruin your timing and destroy your engine.
If you follow a manual most people can do it without incident.
