If you are buying a private plate then yes you can put any number, letter configuration you like on it ...as long as you have the plate registered with dvla and that combination is available.. you will receive a certificate of entitlement from dvla,, this type of plate transfer is commonly referred to as a cherished plate...
I deal with these all the time working in a landrover dealership and a lot of people do it to make their vehicle appear ageless.
do a google search on cherished plate or private plates there are tons of companys willing to sell/do the paperwork for you.
depending on the plate you can pay as little as £150 ____________________ https://domharnessphotography.webs.com |

partially right you can not put a standard plate for example "R506TYH"
simply because dvla register all possibilities of these plates before plate issue commencement however if available you can have "R6YAM" or "PIA50"
one of our rangerover customers has a plate consisting of "57TM"
all of these plates will either make the vehicle apparently ageless or in the case of R6yam make the vehicle at first glance appear to be an R plate vehicle
there is no restriction on configuration as long as that plate is not already assigned a vehicle, however as you point out dvla do pre-assign plates automatically.
Plates are assigned regionally in fact as a dealer using the new plate format on registering a new vehicle for the first time the first two letters are assigned by area designation the numbers are assigned in order of registration and as long as they have not already been assigned we can request any order of the last letters

in fact on the rare occasion a vehicle is written off the plate will become available again after xx number of years left dormant meaning that you could have a cherished plate "R506YAH" ____________________ https://domharnessphotography.webs.com |

Hi
I thought that stuff like "R6YAM" was just a normal R reg plate, and thus you are free to put it on a vehicle that would be R reg or newer. When they changed the order of the plates in 1983 they stopped issuing numbers below 20 regularly, but then started selling these later on. Thought all the ones that they sell are ones that were allocated for use (such as those below 20) but never issued.
PIA50 is just an old Northern Ireland plate, an Antrim one to be precise from about 20 years ago.
All the best

just to put a fly in the ointment
you cannot change the registration of a PRE REGISTERED vehicle to that of a newer year.................but if like the man said it was first registered in 2002 then he can have any plate older than that,
the year of manufacture is nothing at all to do with the year of registration which is why it is a REGISTRATION plate.
just as an example of this i have a 2000 (x) plated bike which is a 1998 model
and also you can buy a brand new 03 model r1 and register it in 5 years time making it a 2008 new r1, only the model would give away the fact
sorry to go on but there is a bike shop in batley (padgetts) who had a brand new unregistered suzuki gt380 so if you bought this it would become a 04 plated bike
sorry

yep, true. it's date of registration that counts, not date of manufacture.
you can't put a plate with a 'year letter' or number on a vehicle registered before that plate
it's a good scam that the government have going though, in conjunction with the car dealers. most other countries don't have age identifiers on the plate, and I don't know of any others that charge so much for choosing your own number
(i paid 20euro to pick a number - i only needed the 'D' for Düsseldorf at the beginning, then one or two letters and between 1 and 4 numbers) ____________________ "There are some things nobody needs in this world, and a bright-red, hunch-back, warp-speed 900cc cafe racer is one of them - but I want one anyway, and on some days I actually believe I need one. I have been reading most peoples replies to the this subject, and have joined the forum to try to help out people and give some advise.
I have been making number plates, and answering peoples problems for 8 years now, I don't know all the answers, but then neither do DVLA!!! - and thats no joke.
Here are some helpful links to get the ball rolling.

And my email if you have any other questions we can help with craig@craigsplates.com
We are designing at the moment a site just dedicated for bike plates, but at present just take a look at https://www.craigsplates.com
