Making a manometer to balance carbs

I've seen different methods, some people use two bottles and link them together, some people take four bottles, and link all four together, and some people just take 2 or 4 bottles and just link them directly to the carbs.

What are the pro's and con's?

Easiest is just a tube of liquid - no bottles required.

So you mean 4 individual tubes capped at the bottom?

That link you posted, it looks like he is just using one tube for two carbs, does his bike have 2 cylinders or 4?

EDIT: just thought, if it was capped would you have the same suction as if it was in a bottle? Or did you mean to just use one tube and bend it like the other guy?

The reason I want to do four at the same time is so I can see all the levels at the same time

Just one tube between 2 carbs. Depending how your 4 carbs are set up, you can either balance 1v2 together, then 3v4 together, then balance 1&2 against 3&4 (as 1v3, 1v4, 2v3 or 2v4) or one of your carbs has no adjustment and the other 3 do, so you balance 1v2, 1v3, 1v4.

Hi

If linked at the bottom then the levels should even out without the engine running.

Remember that water is light enough to be pulled up a fairly large distance by intake vacuum. Hence decent kits used mercury (not easy to find these days).

I use ATF, aquarium pipe from Homebase and a bit of wood. ATF is bright red so easy to see, and wont do any harm if sucked into the engine.

Just found out that I need something else as well, not sure where to buy it from either!

There is a rubber plug screwed into cylinder 1, I need an adapter to screw into this which I can then plug my hose on to.

Anyone know the proper name for these or where to buy them from?

Thanks, managed to get some from the morgan carbtune site for £5

So, still undecided whether to connect all four hoses together, or just do two at a time.

What would you lot do? Surely the 4 way is best but why do most people do two at a same? Just pure lazy? lol

Looking at this pic, the amount of liquid in the 1st and 4th tube is more than 2 and 3.

Would this affect the reading at all? Or the fact that those tubes have bends in them?

Doesn't matter how much liquid is perceived in each tube, the important bit is that they are all level - they effectively have the same reservoir, and all equally are effected by gravity, so the only contributing factor to a varying level would be the pressure (or lack of) above the fluid, which is what you're measuring.

just make sure that if you do the 2 carbs at a time test, make sure your doing it from the base carb ie the carb with no adjustment

Unless the carbs are of the type where you balance 1 to 2, then 3 to 4, then 1 and 2 to 3 and 4.
