Right I have had enough issues with this bike now Laughing

The clutch is an absolute ball ache to pull in, so much so I have not used the clutch today. Thought I'd ride it in and see if it frees up. Come to a set of lights and needed 2 hands to pull it in.

The lever isn't bolted too tight, its got plenty of movement and bits of grease in the gaps. The cable is free, totally free, not trapped anywhere and pulls in and out smooth when not connected.

Clutch is slipping when I rev the bike high still.. im guessing backing off the adjuster on the left hand casing is my next step for that bit... but it still shouldn't be the cause for the clutch being heavier than a bowling ball.

If anyone local fancies a look, please let me know, i'll ride over as it is really doing my tits in now... I can barely ride the bike due to it. Thumbs Down

I have just replaced part that broke (cable attaches to it and it pushes against the clutch pushrod) thinking it was that.. it was broken anyway, but thought it was so worn that could be the reason...it wasn't

Happy to travel around Kent this evening to get it sorted, that way I can get a VFR back to Woking for Shereen... and get on using my bike Laughing

Hi

Is there an adjuster on the engine end?

If so the angle the cable makes when it reaches it makes a big difference

All the best

Keith

Yep, 2 adjusters, one on bar and one at engine. They are all lined up straight, slotted in the gaps etc. I cleaned all the grime away (was LOADS behind the front sprocket cover) and still its a right nugget to use.

Hi

Should be about a 90 degree angle between the cable and the lever it operates.

All the best

Hi

Might well be hidden (like on the 600 Bandit where the cable goes into something which looks a bit like a slave cylinder). With these you generally have an adjustment process where you back the adjuster right off (with the cable adjuster backed off as well), then tighten it until it just makes contact with the clutch push rod, then slacken it back a touch before tightening the lock nut. The adjust the cable.

If the adjuster is wrong then the cable is trying to pull round the lever at an odd angle. Sorry, can't explain it very well, but imagine taking the top end off an engine and pulling the con rod up. When the crank is around the half way mark the vertical pull easily rotates the crank. If the crank is close to zero degree from the tdc position then most of your force is wasted pulling against the engine rather than rotating the crank.

All the best

Keith

I half understand... this probably means more dismantling Laughing

Anyway I grabbed a quick snap of the lever end and managed to get a shot of the pushrod.
Behind that rubber centre is the adjustment + locknut.

If you could tell me how to adjust it to get it right, I'll be very grateful Cool

Off topic, my speedo is intermittent. Assume its front sprocket driven as there is a sensor there... anything to look at? I know rough speed/rpm/gear so its not all bad.

Hi

Not certain with your clutch, but an educated guess would be slacken the adjuster off at the lever (just so it doesn't interfere). Take the cap off the adjuster on the sprocket cover. Slacken off the lock nut. Loosen the adjuster right off and then gently tighten until you feel resistance. Then back off half a turn, hold the adjuster and do up the lock nut. Put the cap back on the adjuster then adjust the cable adjuster on the bars.

As to speedo, I presume it works off a crown piece on the front sprocket nut. Firs thing is probably to check it isn't damaged.

All the best

Keith

I can adjust the cable at both ends... if I take the plastic off.

Can I just back off the lever adjustment, adjust the locknut then fiddle with the lever adjustment again.

Sorry to be a pain Laughing

Hi

Don't think it matters what end you adjust the cable (both ends just change the length of the outer relative to the inner). Only reason to slacken it right off is to stop it affecting what you feel when adjusting the main adjuster on the sprocket cover. If you can't slacken it off enough for that then you will need to use bother cable adjusters (orr just unhook the cable from the clutch lever).

All the best

Keith

Nope. Looks like a ride home with the heaviest clutch in the world. I'll find a screwdriver later and slacken it off.

Have you tried spraying some WD40 or something in there (perhaps some grease to lube the cable. Could the lever mounting be bent, so its not travelling freely, and hence the stiffness (Ooo errr)

Nah lever/cable are all fine.

I had this side of the clutch stuff dismantled and all cleaned and greased up.

Getting sick of fixing things now..
