I only have a few polished bits on any of my bikes as I prefer the anodised finish. But parts that have looked scruffy in the past have come up nicely with emery cloth and a dab of WD40.
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/emery+cloth/type/any/page/1
I then use Duraglit type metal polish wadding to keep it looking good. ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

Buy a polishing mop, fit it to an electric drill and buy some proper polishing paste, it will make the job so much easier.
Use wet and dry to start with, then go to the polishing pastes/sticks.
If you feel you can't resist the allure of Autosol use it as the final polish.
A word of advice, if you use Autosol with a polishing mop, buy a separate mop and use it specifically for Autosol only, the Autosol tends to saturate the mop, and will leave a residue on anything you polish with the mop.
Seriously using Autosol, as your only polishing agent, is just making more work for yourself, buy the polishing pastes/sticks, they're relatively cheap and you'll see the difference straight away. ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

Unless you have a big mop 15 minutes isn't going to be enough. I've done a lot of polishing and it takes hours to get the finish you want. One tip is to sand it with wet and dry, wet, in an orbital fashion, as random as possible. Rubbing back and forth creates marks all going in the same direction which are harder to polish out.
You also need to ensure that all of the scratches from the lower grades of paper are removed before moving to the next level. I rarely use more than a 800 grit for major work and then a 1200 prior to polishing.
To get these fork legs to a similar shine as the stanchions took about 4 hours each side

The quality of the aluminium also causes problems. If you look at my old eliminator you can see different finishes in the fork legs, timing cover and clutch cover. This is just down to the differences in the alloy. Sometimes you just have to accept that the finish is as good as it gets.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again, methelated spirits helps to preserve the finish. The ethanol causes micro corrosion on the surface of the alloy in a similar, but not as effective, way to anodising. It does reduce the shine but not enough to make a difference. The only off the shelf polish that I have any confidence in is peek. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |
