Starter clutch? or the starter relay?
i had the relay go in mine (92) and wouldn't really look at second hand unless your short of cash because all the others may be on there way out too!
Mine was about £90 too

I'll fully admit to not being the most mechanical headed fellow just yet, but it was definitely the starter clutch I was told to look for. If you don't recommend 2nd hand mate, have you a link to anywhere I can get a new one from? Cheers again for your help. Very Happy

A starter clutch is the bit that engages the starter motor to the main engine. At a guess it's a centrifugal clutch; so if the starter motor doesn't have enough power to turn it or the engine is already spinning then it won't do 'owt bad.

Have had a poke around Google and have found an link to an old eBay auction for a starter clutch for a CBR600 so they are real parts, might be best to talk to a Honda dealer to find out firstly how much they cost new and if they are normally called starter clutch just tell him that you've been told you need one and havn't ever heard of them before. Think it might be the bit that engine connects to the starter motor to start the bike.

Don't see that bump starting it should be too much of a problem.

Apparantly it can fry the electrics on a few newer bikes, but I can't see that happening. Most of the bike's I've had I have bump started at some point, never had a problem with it.

In the end you're basically doing the same thing as the starter. Should be pretty easy on the CBR, 600cc 4's usually only need 10 meters push or so.

By centrifugal clutch do you mean one, that doesn't require use of the clutch? These are commonly used in MX/supermoto/trail etc but not heard of them on sports bikes?

If by centrifugal, that is what you mean, then surely you can't bump start it very easily??? I know the XR650 my mate was racing, would be impossible to bump start without a tractor pulling it Laughing that had a centrifugal clutch..

Centrifugal clutches are automatic clutches, as the clutch rotates faster the clutch pads spin out further (they are held inwards by springs) and grip the clutch drum and provide the power like a normal clutch then. Have a read of this guide to centrifugal clutches if you want to know more, it is about minimoto ones but centrifugal clutches are the still the same on any bike which has one.

A centrifugal clutch just for the startor.

Minimotos use them, as do scooters. As the revs rise the clutch plates move out against springs. The faster it goes the higher the centrifugal force, so the more they 'grip' as such.

As you can't control what revs they engage manually I've never heard of a big bike using them... I suppose you could have a way to manually engage it, but I suspect it would be pretty heavy if it was cable operated; you would have to fight against varying centrifugal force.

Yeah I know how they work, that's why I was confused about a CBR600 using one, but now you've cleared it up, it's the starter clutch Doh!

MX/supermoto's commonly use these, my mate races an XR650 which has a centrifugal clutch, not sure how it works really with engaging it etc, he just gets on and rides off, no clutch! Laughing

Seen quite a few KTM's running these too.

Presumably it's not too bad on a bike with a big spread of torque; where you don't need to slip the clutch.

I presume you can't stall it either, which would have definite advantages for motocross I suspect Smile. It seems the clutch is pulled in by the foot pedal as you chance gear?

I'm not too sure how it works.

Had a quick search on google and found this, it isn't exactly what I'm thinking about but seems another way of not using the clutch;

https://www.pro-supermoto.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/278

But the thing I am thinking about is a normal centrifugal clutch that doesn't require use of the lever.

Shhhhhhh I didn't read the full description of the link, have realised it is a centrifugal clutch Laughing when it said Zstart I thought it was just a device for pulling away quicker without using the clutch - having read it, then yes that's what I'm on about - a centrigual MX clutch Very Happy
