... I'm the only sad Bugger posting here on Christmas

Hi Smile
------------------

1. What year bike is it?

Why Would You Get another 2 set of carbs fitted after the new first one you got fitted didn't fix it?

If a new set of carbs didn't sort it the first time
Then another new 2 set wont fix it either

-----------------

It also help's if we know the problem?

What the bike is doing?
Does it start
Is it bogging?
Is it reacting under load?
Is it a standard bike?

Smile

Lets see if I can make your post a little clearer

SPIKEYMIKEY wrote:
its a zx7r p2 model. It started to hesitate so i was not happy with it, as it was quite dangerious.

I booked it in to a garage and I took it as far as I could without a dyno. So when I went to the first garage they rolling roaded it and said it was running to rich and could not lean it down as the emulsion tubes were worn in carbs. That cost me £160.

They said get another set of carbs so this is what i did.
I took it to another garage as i was not happy with the one I had been to.

I got the bike rolling roaded again. I then get a call to say that the carbs i brought needed new needles as it was running too rich. I got new needles fitted and got a call saying "all done"

I picked it up, whilst riding it home but had no joy. It was even worse, like riding a bucking horse. It was scary as hell.
I took it back and he (the mechanic) insisted that it was still fuel related so my friend had a set of carbs that he said worked fine so I dropped them in and returned the carbs with the new needles.

I still can't figure out why the bike is acting the way it is. The mechanic said it sometimes runs fine, then changes back again.

Sorry this post is long winded.

So you have ruled out the carbs being the problem.

Have you checked that you are getting enough fuel flow from the tank?

Vacuum hose from the fuel tap in good condition and seated correctly on both ends?

Is the fuel filter clean and not clogged?

Are you getting good fuel flow?

Is your air filter clean?

any leaks on inlet rubbers or air box ?

Bucking could be a miss fire under load, check HT leads and coils

Or if it has been running rich to the point of plug fouling/wetting....throw those plugs away and put new ones in

I chased a similar fault and did everything BUT change the plugs...after spending loads of hours and cash changing wiring, earth paths, coilpacks , HT leads , re-flashing firmwares on the ignition etc....a new set of plugs 100% sorted it (once I discoverd and rectified why my plugs were getting fuel wetted under certain conditions)

after I had discovered (think it was either a Dave Vizzard or Dave Walker article I read) that once plugs get wet to the point of shorting they can create a micro path in the insulation they are in fact 100% junk reliability wise and no matter how much heating them cherry or blasting them or meticulously polishing/cleaning them - you are on to a loser till they have been replaced - even if they spark like good uns outside the engine

Regards
...and Merry Xmas
Rob

Well if it's running rich there are two ways of looking at it;
Something is causing it to aw in far too much fuel...
Or something is stopping it getting enough air.

Leaking inlet rubbers or airbox would cause it to run lean, as would aftermarket filter and exhaust if I am correct...

Also, Lipsmoker was just being a smartarse as he couldn't/wouldn't decipher your post Laughing I am far from an expert, merely willing to try and help Smile

The sets of carbs you tried, were they brand new or second hand? The reason I ask is did they have the standard needles and jets? If they had been messed with then it would just make finding the problem harder. The carbs you borrowed, were they from the same model of bike? (Silly question as I imagine they were).

How is the bike to start? Does it start from cold without the choke or not? If you take out the spark plugs, what colour are they?

How did the mechanics you took it to decide it was running rich? I'd have thought that if it wasn't firing properly then you'd get alot of unburnt fuel in the exhaust, making it look like it was running rich? (Someone tell me if I'm talking crap here, I'm just trying to think logically)

Really need someone like kickstart or stinkwheel in here Laughing

EDIT: Will it run without the airfilter? My otherhalves 125 would run like a bag of shit with the filter in but was fine without it. Also, have you checked that the air ducts aren't blocked?

Have you still got standard exhaust and air filter? Also, is the Akrapovic just a slip on end can or entire system?

Importantly, when did the problem start? Had you made any changes to the bike recently before?

Your not running it with the choke on are you? I know some people buy a bike and don't realise which way is on and which way is off for the choke lever / plunger... Laughing

Does it do it all the time or just sometimes? At high rpm, low rpm or both?

It's fair to say that this forum won't be able to advise on the fuelling side any better than the place you have been to. If it has been set up on a dyno then it should be ok on the fuelling.

Which makes electrics look more of a likelihood.

If it runs well sometimes, and poorly at other times, then the joy of an intermittent electrical fault is a possibility. In no particular order, possibilities are:

1. Corroded earth points.
2. Knackered plugs
3. Knackered HT leads
4. Knackered battery or regulator/rectifier

Diagnosing intermittent poor running is very tricky from afar. Even more difficult on a bike with a highly modified fuel or exhaust system that has been played with by someone else, some of which might not know what they are doing.

when was the last time you did the valve clearances,
its my go to answer, but i had similar issues with my zxr750, i was chasing my tail for ages before i bit the bullet,
turned out a few of the valves were so tight i couldnt actually get a feeler guage in there,
once i sorted it, bike ran like a dream,

There's the problem right there!

or more likely tight valves...only needs one to be tight...
