Hey everyone i've only just joined the forums and am looking for general tips on how to maintain my bike, riding tips and tricks and general tips and hints like that.

I'm not 100% sure but i think my bike is a 50cc derbi senda X-TREME on an '08 plate, its one of the older models and i haven't really been able to find much in mags or on the derbi website so i was hoping someone on here could help me with what i mentioned earlier.

like i said i've only just joined the forum and it would be good to get to know some people who can help if something goes wrong Very Happy

thanks in advance, Dan

P.s i will attach a picture of the bike so if someone could identify it for definate it would very much appreciated.

Check gearbox oil, change if you feel its overdue.

Keep the 2 stroke tank full... do not let it get empty.

Kick/start the bike and then put your gear on, let it warm up a little before ragging the nuts out of it. A few miles riding nicely shoulod help it warm up.

Where abouts are you from?

First thing to know, this forum is full of people who hate newbies. I don't know why and I don't ask. It just is. Sad

I guess the first thing to do is basic safety training, but I assume you've already done the CBT. Never forget that thing they tell you about looking over your shoulder, it honestly will save your life one day.

Basic maintenance is important, check your tyres once a week to make sure they are at the correct pressures and top up the fluid when necessary. There's a downloadable workshop manual for Derbi bikes here: https://www.manualedereparatie.info/en/categorii/Derbi.html

Oil the chain regularly, you won't feel it like you will on a bicycle but the bike will struggle exactly the same if the chain goes dry and gets all gritty.

If you've got a grease-gun, it's worth squirting some fresh grease into the grease nipple (nothing to do with porn) on the swing-arm. It probably hasn't been done since 2008.

Don't de-restrict the bike if you want to re-sell it; if you de-restrict it you risk wearing out the engine very fast and the bike won't be worth much. A well looked after 50cc dirt bike has a good re-sale value but bad ones are only good for spare parts.

Jeez, a bike only just eligible for an MOT is 'one of the older models' now!
I hate to think how you would describe even the YOUNGEST of my bikes..... 'Ancient' perhaps Shocked I mean, it's only 19 years old... just a couple more than you! The oldest of course, at 34yrs, must be positively 'Jurassic', and GAWD knows what that makes me! Laughing

1/ Buy a manual.
2/ find section 'Routine Maintenence'
3/ Work your way down the list.... its probably not had any of it since it was new! and that was a REALLY long time ago!

Chains & sprockets need regular attension; DO NOT let the two stroke oil reservoir run dry. Find the gear-box oil filler and drain plug. And change the gear-oil; frequently forgotten, that one.

Keep the thing standard for reliability; save any penies you thing of spending to make it 'faster' for a bigger bike.

Don't ride like a tit; presume every-one is out to kill you and you wont be far wrong

Make sure you have clearly visible, standard sized L-Plates front and back.

Buy 'spares; cheap off -ebay. They are cheap, and they DO break off.

Plod LOVE to tug for non display of L's or cut-down, non legal L's, or broken off ones. STUPID little offence; BUT they can wallop you with two points and a hefty fine for fuck all effort for it; and if pedantic enough, deem you to be riding other than in accordance with licence, to deem you uninsured and hence sieze the bike. ENT worth it, for £5 worth of plates.

Have fun; look to get licence as son as you can.

Yep, i've just bought some hi-vis' on ebay and will pop down to halfords tomorrow for spare L's.

don't get me wrong i've got nothing against older bikes, my dad owns a '53 Ford Pop/T-Bucket hotrod and my mum drives a '65 caddy and so i only assume its an older model because its hard to find in mags and the such. Very Happy

and i'm hoping to start practicing on the bike bike a bit more regularly now that i've time for the christmas holidays Smile

I second that. The police will look more kindly on you if you always properly display L-plates, it makes it look more like you're following the rules.

You'll get about a month's grace after a change of keeper, then the DVLA will start sending you threats. It takes 5 minutes to SORN online, it's really up to you.
