I've got an old PC which is from 2003. My PSU is on the way out. I guess that PCs have different power supplies. So if I get one off ebay, what keywords do i need to know ?atx maybe ?

what power supply have you got in there at the moment? What connections do you need? I tended to go for a slightly higher PSU than I needed. I always go for at least 750w (think they are from about £35 upwards)

Yes you need an atx one. The main board connector is the same, but modern PSU's will come with some extra connectors you don't need. Check if it comes with the old style chunky hard drive power connectors and not the smaller SATA ones.
Most come with both, or converters.

!!!

colin1, it's very unlikely that you need to buy a 750w PSU.

My only advice for PSUs is to get a branded one, with a warranty. A 400w branded PSU is infinitely better than a 750w non branded one.

I've had plenty of shite ones go tits up.

My last psu was a 750w CiT, OK so it only lasted 4 years with the PC being switched off for a total of 4-5 nights in the whole 4 years, the rest of the time it was worked hard.... and that cost me about £30-40. But thanks for the advice there carvell, I'll remember in future to buy a lower powered branded one that probably wouldn't even get close to starting my system.... Rolling Eyes

PSU Wattage claims are pretty much up there with vast pixel counts on cheap cameras, that big shiny number doesn't actually mean it's any good. A smaller quality unit from a respected manufacturer will not only last longer, but will usually come with a better warranty just in case it doesn't.

It's also worth noting that very few PCs from 2003 will need anything close to 750w. It's likely going to be a northwood P4 or late Athlon for a machine of that vintage, a good 400w will cover that in it's sleep.

750w is overkill, unless you happen to be running SLI Graphics cards which require 300-400w minimum each.

my 8800 GTS requires 400w minimum, and you can get away with a 500w PSU with that, the rest of the system doesn't need alot.

As for the price range, you can get a cheap PSU but they're not recommended as they can have faults... I'm actually running a £15,50 750w PSU at the moment my self, because I was on a budget and my old PSU actually blew up.

Anyways back on topic.

Most PSU's now will come with several MOLEX and several SATA connection's, but some will only come with 1 or 2 sata connections max, and no 6 pin PCI-E Power supply for graphics cards, but you can find converters which takes 2 MOLEX connections and converts it into a 6 Pin PCI-E connection (For graphic cards)

750w is total overkill unless you have big gfx cards.

i am running a corsair cx 400w with an ati 3870 and a stock clock phenom 9950. i would think if its a pre-built machine it will only have a 350w PSU in anyway.

that PSU was £33 2 years ago from OCuk. i havent been in the market for a PSU in a while so cant tell you how much something like that would cost.

on a side note, i have seen cheap PSUs take out motherboards as well, granted its very rare for that to happen but bare that in mind before you spend next to nothing on a PSU

500W V2 Silent Power Supply
£18.98 inc VAT

Job done. 500w is way more than you'll ever need. If you're running a PC from 2003 then even if you do upgrade chances are you'll buy something low spec in which case you can reuse that power supply in your new system. Or you'll probably just buy some pre-made system in which case it doesn't matter

It's just cheap crap though.

I have a brand new OCZ ZS 550W PSU (still sealed - was a replacement). Still has warranty and receipt etc.

PM me if you're interested.

i got me one of these in my mian rig

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-029-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084

you have to run at least 2 of these in a 9 year old PC seeing as they they need power per flops of processing power, so putting a big PSU in it you can make even more powerful

I have always found this very good
I noticed that it is currently down for maintanance but it allows you to calculate what PSU you need.

who the fuck keeps making people do that shit. multiplying the clock by number of cores is complete bollocks. if you are running a single threaded app (whcih a suprising amount of stuff is still) it doesnt run it at 13.4ghz, its runs it 3.3 or whatever the clock is.

and mulit threaded apps will run more than one thread at 3.3, not 6.6 is its a 2 threaded app, who ever started this shit should be shot in face.

It was an eBay thing as far as I can tell, and yes, totally agreed with the whole shooting their faces off thing. I had to grit my teeth many a time when people commented on that at work Neutral

Too true! That's even if you do not have Intel Speedstep or the AMD equivalent activated. My 2500k runs at 1.6Ghz most of the time for general tasks, then boosts up to full speed if an app needs it.

Saves electricity and lowers heat, win win.
