Excuse my lack of knowledge on this first of all Embarassed

Ive been watching a few bike vids on counter steering, how to do it and how it works etc, but I was just wondering would it apply/work on a 50cc moped that does around 55, This is with regards to the shape (scooter) so would it work and is it worth while doing? Please no lectures on get a big bike and license as I will do ASAP! Laughing

Thanks, H

I get my knee down on the NRG and the rox, anything is possible on any bike however I don't recommend you do the knee down thing as the exhaust tends to go down aswell and that shit costs.

Apart from low speed manoeuvres all steering on any bike is through counter-steering.

Try rounding a corner at about 30mph and pull gently on the outside grip. The bike will dip into the turn more tightly. Even a push-bike does it.

Yes it does, you already do it subconciously but to try it conciously; pick a wide quiet road and see what happens when you turn the bars one way or the other - it will tip in and start to turn, probably in the opposite way to what you are thinking. It is good to get it ingrained in your head in case you need to turn quick in an emergency.

During SLOW turning the way you pull the bar is the way you turn, once you are going a bit faster and the bike needs to lean to make it round a bend then you need to countersteer.

All two wheeled vehicles, even bicycles do it Thumbs Up .

I highly recommend buying/downloading "keith code, a twist of the wrist 2".

Counter-steering is how you steer on any two-wheeled vehicle, from bicycles up to and including Superbikes. You just don't always consciously realise you're doing it.

I think the speed change is something like 15-20 mph and over requires counter steering. you will do it anyway as its quite natural and will of led on from your bicycle days.

The speed at which counter-steering becomes effective, depends on the weight of the bike and the diameter of the tyres, but usually starts to happen between 10 and 15mph.

You need to master counter-steering to successfully complete the swerve exercise on the Mod1 test, but even if you consciously try to body-steer, the bike will tend to counter-steer itself - you probably just weren't aware of it!

It's much better to consciously counter-steer and let your body follow the bike.

Just a thought - if your machine does 55mph, it's not technically a 'Moped' is it?

This, I've always found you need to countersteer, and know you're doing it, but leaning is also useful as it balances the bike during the corner. If you can get the Apex right, get your body in the right position and countersteer then you can ride quite quickly much more safely.

For most people its the leaning that produces the counter steer.

I'm not even sure you can get round a corner once you're doing a few mph without leaning, and thus counter-steering.

People really over think this stuff.

you are right, you couldn't - once over a certain speed (10-15mph) the only way to turn the bike is through counter-steering.

At ANY speed. Where having you got this "10-15mph" from?

Because it's possible to steer only using the bars at walking pace.

Counter steering!
FFS this subject really winds me up!

Never, in the history of biking, has so much bollox been written on one subject, (I blame the interweb!) Rolling Eyes

If you have to think about "counter steering" while your riding, two wheeled vehicles are NOT for you.

Sell your bikes & push irons now and buy something with more farkin' wheels, it'll save the emergency services having to scrape your remains of a lamp post.

Have to agree with this point! Laughing With the exception of studying/analysing your riding to make improvements.

you for real? when you are in a car park and pulling into a space at 5mph do you find yourself countersteering the bike, or when doing a u-turn i assume you have your bars facing the opposite direction to where you want to go! no didn't think so.

Well not really, i think a lot of people do it without realizing what it even is, but after doing a bit of research about counter steering can do it more effectively.
For example i tend to lean a lot around bends and what not, but if i consciously for example push the left handlebar on a left hand bend, i will turn a lot more tight and without anywhere near as much body lean.

I will concede, at walking pace maybe... but I'm talking about when riding properly, certainly at speeds lower than "10-15mph".

Yes for real. It is subtle but you are doing it without even realising. U-turn is a particularly bad example on your part... think about it logically. I am not talking about turning the bars 45 degrees or anything like that, just lightly weighting the inside bar.

You're the one that's wrong in the head.

If I'm riding casually I let the lean (ie my weight subtly pulling the outside bar) cause the PASSIVE Counter-Steering to occur

If I want to ride quickly, and clinically, I initiate the lean by pushing one bar and pulling the other. This is ACTIVE Counter-Steering

Anybody who disagrees with this is a full-weight thick cunt.

ok, i will agree my U-turn example is a poor one.
