As some may know, i had a 600RR3 as my first bike back in 2008 and absolutely loved it, after i sold it i replaced it with an SP-1 and then replaced that with a P8F ninja, neither of which really did a lot for me so decided to go back to what i know i like and bought another 600RR but this time i went for the 05 model which i fell in love with instantly Very Happy .

The 05 is basically just an 03 model but all the little niggles and flaws have been ironed out so i was confident i was going to like it and decided i was going to throw a bit of cash at it and make it my own as i plan to keep this for atleast a couple of years.

what i've fitted so far:

Moto gp carbon exhaust
evotech tail tidy
oxford mini LED indicators all round
slightly smaller plate
tinted double bubble screen
stubby brake/clutch levers
Goodridge braided brake lines all round
H.I.D headlight conversion
removed the catalytic converter (by removed i mean smashed out Laughing )
aftermarket fairing kit
honda rim stickers

Here's how i got the bike, as you can see it is completely standard, which is nice as it means i have a blank canvas to start with.

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-02-25183512.jpg

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-02-25144947.jpg

within the first week i bought quite a few bit's and pieces, not all of which i took photos of, but they will be shown as the project progresses.

i intend to give this bike a complete make over and tidy up as it has seen quite a few winters by the looks of things behind the fairings and it generally needs tidying up.

Some of the fairing panels have marks on them with the most noticable being a rather large scuff on the seat unit so i ordered a new fairing set from china 3-4 weeks ago and should be getting that very soon.

The paint on the wheels was a bit flakey in places aswell so decided that they would need powder coating to bring them back to former glory. So the first job was to get the wheels off and remove the bearings and discs and get them down to the coaters.

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-03-31143344.jpg

Whille i was waiting for the wheels i decided to get the fairings off and have a good cleanup behind there

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-04142916.jpg

Then i thought while i was there i may aswell check the valve clearences and change the coolant so set to work on that.

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-03-31151841.jpg

airbox off

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-01090452.jpg

radiator off

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-01090440.jpg

throttle bodies off (sort of Laughing )

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-01093855.jpg

valve cover off and checked clearences, the bike has only covered 12,000 miles so was a bit suprised when i found one of the clearences was out. So off came the holders and cams.

Went and got the new shim from cmc bikes up the road where they charge £3 for a shim exchange Confused . I would have just payed £5 for a new one and kept the other as a spare but i like to get it back together while it's all still fresh in my head where everything goes and also there is less time for stuff to go missing Laughing .

the bike is now back in one piece minus the wheels and fairing but i'll update when they arrive whch should be any day now.

It's definitely worth buying a shim kit for about £75 off eBay, as you'll only ever need one set. You get about 120 shims, 5 of each size. Anything to stop garages raping people. Consider it lucky though, when I was doing the clearances on my friends YZF250, the EXCHANGE was £5, and he needed 3 shims. Fucking extortion considering what a shim is.

didn't even know there were such things as shim kits Laughing

Think i will be having one of those as the superfour takes the same diameter shims and roughly the same thickness range aswell.
Mr.kris off here has a complete spare top end off his ninja and i was going to use him as my shim bank but all the ninja shims are far thicker than all the ones in my cbr and cb400. Mine are mainly between 180-205 and all his are above 240 by the looks of them Confused

bit of an update.

Got the wheels back from the powder coaters, im happy with the finish but despite me telling them to mask off all the bits that are not currently painted and actually standing there and pointing all the bits out they managed to powder coat all the threaded holes for the disc bolts, all the mating surfaces for the discs and was a fair bit inside the bearing holes aswell Confused

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06112500.jpg

managed to scrounge a tap and dye set from the garage up the road and started re-tapping all the disc bolt holes to remove all the paint

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06125911.jpg

Used a sharp chisel to scrape off all the mating surfaces for the discs and got set up for putting the tyres back on

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06141850.jpg

front tyre fitted and ready for pumping back up. Sealing a tyre onto a bead does not require a compressor, contrary to popular belief, my footpump method works first time everytime Cool

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06142841.jpg

cleaned up all the discs and refitted them with new bolts all round, also refitted the bearings and dust seals

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06153314.jpg

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-06154110.jpg

next job was to strip and clean the R/H front caliper, i did the L/H one last week and it's not my favourite job so couldnt be arsed to do them both at the same time Laughing . They were ready for doing though as there was a fair bit of winter crud behind the dust seals, the oil seals were fine though.

salty buildup behind the dust seal groove

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-07110602.jpg

all cleaned and ready for re assembly

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20wheels/2012-04-07112946.jpg

wheels and caliper refitted and put the old fairings back on for now as i hav'nt riddent if for a while and was itching to get out on it Laughing

My fairing kit is still sat in parcelfarces depot so wont be seeing them till next week, will update again when they arrive

Care to tell the reasons why you like the RR's but not the SP1/ZX6R?

I own a SP1 and absolutely love it. That being said, I don't use it everyday and nor could I because it's too noisy. I've always been curious about the RR's but there's nothing about them other than their looks that should tempt me because "they're just another boring IL4 600".

the sp-1 was a good bike and without a doubt one of the best built bikes you can buy, the noise it made was sexual and it looked like pure sex, even the power delivery was exiting, which is rare in a v-twin. The thing that ruin's it IMO is that it is a big heavy bike and you do feel it compared to a 600, also (probably the biggest gripe) the suspension was dreadfull unless the road was smooth, any bumps would have the bike getting tied in allsorts of knots. I know this could have probably been fixed but it would have required a fair ammount of money thrown at it, even then there is no guarantees. I believe the SP-2 had more road friendly suspension and probably would have had one if they didnt cost silly money

Having said all that i did love it to bit's and really miss it at times. If i could have afforded to keep it and still have an RR i would have.

As for the ninja, it was also a good bike but having owned so many honda's it was never going to live up to my expectations as far as build quality goes. It only had 4000 miles on it and was already showing signs of rust and it just felt a bit wierd to ride, like something wasnt right.
The motor was pretty gutless, even for a 600 and having a pillion onboard pretty much kills it. Also it never really felt like it was trying or was under any strain in the higher rpm's. the redline was pretty high being up at 16.5krpm but it only felt like it was revving to 13k.

In short, the RR makes a better road bike than both of them and to me the RR-3 is still the best looking bike ever made Laughing

parcel arrived!!!

downside is customs decided i needed to pay £190 Evil or Very Mad

I think they must have made a mistake somewhere so i'm looking into that and will hopefully see some of it refunded by around 2015 knowing what there like Confused

On the upside they have made a really nice job of the paintwork and i'm dead impressed with it and hopefully it will fit as well as it looks. Not started fitting it yet but will be up at the crack of dawn and will have it done by tomorrow afternoon.

just finished putting the fairings on, as expected i had to clean some paint out a few holes and do a bit of jiggling to make it all fit together properly but nothing drastic.

Also put some stickers on the wheels to finish it off which fit in quite nice i think.

out with the old

dont think I would buy another from china after the bill customs gave me this time.
Hope the aussies were right for your sake, kinda takes the special moment away when they slap you with a massive bill.
Have been following your thread and am looking forward to seeing the kit go on, its gonna look awesome with the corse kit!

Thats why I bought from the ones I did, they mark it as low value~$130 to lower the tax smash at this end. I paid nothing Wink

Those colours really do look fantastic. I guess you have to find someone locally who will paint the tank for you or is that something the company does also?

The tank has a cover on it which is already colour coded to the bike.

CBR600RRs and 1000RR fireblades have a plastic tank, the cover is part of the fairing, so it ought to be ABS. Have a look at any 600RR/1000RR kit and you'll see that the tank is always included in the fairing package

Look at the tank in this pic without the cover.

On my Ninja the tank just has a plastic cover over it much like my normal fairings. Doesn't really wear down from rider useage but if you through the bike down the road it scrapes/cracks like normal fairings.

Oh I see...didn't realise these new fan dangled bikes have plastic covers over the tanks these days. Whats the score with fairing sets for bikes with a non-covered tank? Got to get it sprayed I guess??

Yeah pretty much have to get the actual tank sprayed. That's why I think the new design is slightly better and givs the tank a tad more protection.
