 |
|
As some may know, i had a 600RR3 as my first bike back in 2008 and absolutely loved it, after i sold it i replaced it with an SP-1 and then replaced that with a P8F ninja, neither of which really did a lot for me so decided to go back to what i know i like and bought another 600RR but this time i went for the 05 model which i fell in love with instantly .
The 05 is basically just an 03 model but all the little niggles and flaws have been ironed out so i was confident i was going to like it and decided i was going to throw a bit of cash at it and make it my own as i plan to keep this for atleast a couple of years.
what i've fitted so far:
Moto gp carbon exhaust
evotech tail tidy
oxford mini LED indicators all round
slightly smaller plate
tinted double bubble screen
stubby brake/clutch levers
Goodridge braided brake lines all round
H.I.D headlight conversion
removed the catalytic converter (by removed i mean smashed out )
aftermarket fairing kit
honda rim stickers
Here's how i got the bike, as you can see it is completely standard, which is nice as it means i have a blank canvas to start with.

https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-02-25183512.jpg
https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-02-25144947.jpg
within the first week i bought quite a few bit's and pieces, not all of which i took photos of, but they will be shown as the project progresses.
i intend to give this bike a complete make over and tidy up as it has seen quite a few winters by the looks of things behind the fairings and it generally needs tidying up.
Some of the fairing panels have marks on them with the most noticable being a rather large scuff on the seat unit so i ordered a new fairing set from china 3-4 weeks ago and should be getting that very soon.
The paint on the wheels was a bit flakey in places aswell so decided that they would need powder coating to bring them back to former glory. So the first job was to get the wheels off and remove the bearings and discs and get them down to the coaters.
https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-03-31143344.jpg
Whille i was waiting for the wheels i decided to get the fairings off and have a good cleanup behind there

Then i thought while i was there i may aswell check the valve clearences and change the coolant so set to work on that.

airbox off

radiator off
https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-01090440.jpg
throttle bodies off (sort of )
https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20project/2012-04-01093855.jpg
valve cover off and checked clearences, the bike has only covered 12,000 miles so was a bit suprised when i found one of the clearences was out. So off came the holders and cams.

Went and got the new shim from cmc bikes up the road where they charge £3 for a shim exchange . I would have just payed £5 for a new one and kept the other as a spare but i like to get it back together while it's all still fresh in my head where everything goes and also there is less time for stuff to go missing .
the bike is now back in one piece minus the wheels and fairing but i'll update when they arrive whch should be any day now. ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

It's definitely worth buying a shim kit for about £75 off eBay, as you'll only ever need one set. You get about 120 shims, 5 of each size. Anything to stop garages raping people. Consider it lucky though, when I was doing the clearances on my friends YZF250, the EXCHANGE was £5, and he needed 3 shims. Fucking extortion considering what a shim is. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. didn't even know there were such things as shim kits
Think i will be having one of those as the superfour takes the same diameter shims and roughly the same thickness range aswell.
Mr.kris off here has a complete spare top end off his ninja and i was going to use him as my shim bank but all the ninja shims are far thicker than all the ones in my cbr and cb400. Mine are mainly between 180-205 and all his are above 240 by the looks of them ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

the sp-1 was a good bike and without a doubt one of the best built bikes you can buy, the noise it made was sexual and it looked like pure sex, even the power delivery was exiting, which is rare in a v-twin. The thing that ruin's it IMO is that it is a big heavy bike and you do feel it compared to a 600, also (probably the biggest gripe) the suspension was dreadfull unless the road was smooth, any bumps would have the bike getting tied in allsorts of knots. I know this could have probably been fixed but it would have required a fair ammount of money thrown at it, even then there is no guarantees. I believe the SP-2 had more road friendly suspension and probably would have had one if they didnt cost silly money
Having said all that i did love it to bit's and really miss it at times. If i could have afforded to keep it and still have an RR i would have.
As for the ninja, it was also a good bike but having owned so many honda's it was never going to live up to my expectations as far as build quality goes. It only had 4000 miles on it and was already showing signs of rust and it just felt a bit wierd to ride, like something wasnt right.
The motor was pretty gutless, even for a 600 and having a pillion onboard pretty much kills it. Also it never really felt like it was trying or was under any strain in the higher rpm's. the redline was pretty high being up at 16.5krpm but it only felt like it was revving to 13k.
In short, the RR makes a better road bike than both of them and to me the RR-3 is still the best looking bike ever made ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

parcel arrived!!!
downside is customs decided i needed to pay £190
I think they must have made a mistake somewhere so i'm looking into that and will hopefully see some of it refunded by around 2015 knowing what there like
On the upside they have made a really nice job of the paintwork and i'm dead impressed with it and hopefully it will fit as well as it looks. Not started fitting it yet but will be up at the crack of dawn and will have it done by tomorrow afternoon.

Look at the tank in this pic without the cover.
https://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx269/salty2121/cbr%20fairing/2012-04-14101800.jpg
On my Ninja the tank just has a plastic cover over it much like my normal fairings. Doesn't really wear down from rider useage but if you through the bike down the road it scrapes/cracks like normal fairings. ____________________ EMRA Roadstock #92 - Paperwork Permitted.
