So we piled into chumrade's GT125R today mob handed. It turns out that it had one of the ACME E-Z-Corrode swing arms, so a new one had been obtained and needed dropped in. But to get the swing arm off, the exhaust (I was assured, since I turned up late) had to come off. Weird, but there we go, shouldn't take... aaah.
Well, OK, that's the rear pipe off, but the front was solid in the head and oops, there goes a stud. After some tugging and twisting, double oops, that's us got two bits of exhaust. While Team A drilled and chiselled the seized remains of what appeared to be anti-tamper bolts off of the pipe-to-can join, Team B wrestled with the stub of the exhaust in the head. Would it come out? Would it buggery.
Anyway, Tef-story-short, three hours later we have a box of bolts - including the bonus secret hidden ones holding the head and barrel on - and the front cylinder head off, with only one exhaust stud snapped off short. After some extended drilling, cutting and eventually HULK SMASH chiselling, the pipe collar eventually gave up the struggle, taking a (hopefully non fatal) chunk of the head with it when it went.
Break for tea, ordering new exhaust pipes, and taking the head away to rebuild with chemical metal, and drilling and tapping for a new stud.
And all that to change the swing arm on a 125.
I'd like the meet the chap who designed this bike and shake him warmly by the throat. It almost feels as though hostility is engineered right into it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Maybe the exhaust is designed to be the backup swingarm when the first rots away? ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

Cheers, we'll give them a try. I think it's going to be a telephone search - I'd just got so used to being able to type and click and have stuff turn up.

Unfortunately, there are people who blame everything and everyone but themselves.
This whole scenario could have been avoided with a little bit of common sense |
I should have made it clearer that the damage was done by the time that I arrived and got fired in.
The culprits are both professional motor engineers, by the way, so of course they're not going to show any common sense. My penetrating oil and their torch were sitting unused behind them, next to their cups of tea with six sugars.
The nub of my gist is that it's a disappointingly (over) engineered bike. 2 cylinders, 4 cams, 8 valves, but not a lot, as you say, of common sense. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'm currently trying "3-in-1 oil pro penetrating spray" because it was the best they had at B&Q, but I'm not loving it. I'll be going back to Plusgas, or if I can find any, Rustola penetrating oil in a proper squeezy-can. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
