Hiding bad welds - wrap?

Hi, made a dual exhaust link pipe for my bike, Tacked it myself but got a mate, who said he could weld !!, to weld it for me. Its come back in hell of a state, massive welds on every seal. Its never going to look clean so im going to need something to cover it, what would you guys recommend that is cheap and looks OK/better/

I usually hide my crappy welding by grinding the worst off with a Dremel and then plastering it with spray paint.

hi, I would grind it down but it would reveal even more holes so It would take forever to get it finally sorted.
Check the pic I attached, It would take many days and discs to
smooth that out.
I was thinking something like this:

Exhaust wrap just traps water causing the pipes to rust, if it is mild steel it wont last long. Stainless might fare better.


The best thing to do is remake it and take it so someone who can weld properly.

You can get them ceramic coated, but doubt it'd be cheaper than getting the job done properly.

That really is an abomination. Can also virtually guarantee that will be full of pin-holes, as he's just blobbed it up all the way round. Was anything prepped? Or did he just leave him self too big a gap and couldn't fill it? Personally, I'd of TIG'ed that.



Best thing to with that would be slit through all the joins, clean them up, and give to someone who has a clue.

it does all looked mig'ed welded, its difficult and for that matter, even at my work place, anything that is stainless is TIG'ed welded.

I'm not saying it can't be done using a MIG welder but as the picture shows its bloody hard!

Welding mild steel using a mig is far easier, with the correct setup of course

On the join near where it says "2011" you can see what looks like 3 holes there. Sorry to say but i think you would be better off scrapping that

Scrap it and start again, and give your mate a slap. There's no point in buying expensive stainless tubing then contaminating it with mild steel filler or cooking it like that abortion, it will rust faster than a mild steel system. Stainless exhausts should be TIG welded if they need a reasonable finish. Don't buy stainless tubing from exhaust suppliers, find a supplier of 'dairy tube' which is available in 304 or 316 grades and much cheaper, look for 1.6mm wall thickness. Take your time forming the joints, they should be a perfect fit, and do not put a prep on the ends. A good fit up can be TIG welded without filler wire (autogenous weld) and should leave a smooth weld surface requiring no dressing at all. Any welding on stainless tubing should also be done with a back purge running.
