Just when I thought I was getting the hang of most basic maintenance! :/

I've got a Honda CBF125 for casual commuting purposes but nobody I know is at all bikey so all my knowledge is from YouTube and educated guessing.

Went down to tighten the chain yesterday (long overdue, moves about 2-3 in) but last time I did it I must have overtightened the rear axle nut (or someone else who was helping me), or since I did it it's rusted on something crazy, and I can't undo it. I put a fair bit of pressure on (+ gravity) but I didn't want to force it in case I broke something.

Top tips for loosening without knackering tools, self or bike?

Thanks buckets guys~

get yourself a good set of Halfords Professional tools, and a proper torque wrench Thumbs Up

It will go mate, can you slip a long tube over your spanner/ratchet to give you more leverage?

If it hurts your hand when you try and apply pressure to the socket wrench or spanner, rap an old t-shirt or rag around it to make it a bit easier for yourself. Thumbs Up

hey hey, just popped out and still no luck whatsoever! to the point where i'm kicking this bloody rachet with as many levers as i have on it and it's still not budging

it did occur to me while i was throwing my godlike might of 130 lb toward the thing that a short while ago, i took my bike in to the garage to get a rear wheel flat sorted, and i haven't done my chain since then -- is this the kind of thing i could wheel down the road back to them and be like "wtf, please fix?"

It shouldn't be that corroded, a steel nut on a steel axle. Unless they use titanium or goat cheese.

Probably can't hurt to get some penetrating fluid or oil in there, then give the nut a whack with a hammer, to try and break up any corrosion. Get a torch on the nut, try and get it off while it's still hot.

But really, just put a longer lever on it. Longer. Lonnnnger.

You're probably going to kill your ratchet.

you really need to get yourself a breaker bar.

This: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-AK730-Breaker-Bar-600mm-1-2-Sq-Drive-/140723338021?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item20c3c3bb25

I guarantee it'll come off easy.

Please don't think that I'm being funny but you are trying to turn the nut in the right direction, aren't you?

Leverage thats what u need . find a steel tube or any other longish bit of pipe u have stick it over the end of your ratchet and stand back and undo it with one hand whilst smoking a cigar . if your nut has rounded u can try grinding it down on the sides so u can fit another size spanner on . it may have a big amount of locktight on it for some reason if so u need to heat it with a torch . if Leverage wont work or even whaking your spanner with a lump id just cut the bastad off

I ended up fly headbutting a wall trying to get the front sprocket nut off my old 1100 many moons ago. Oh how suzuki loved their atomic threadlock.

Put a piece of pipe over the end of the socket to give yourself some leverage.

Might be worth getting someone to sit on the bike while you crack it off, last thing you want to do is put so much force on it (or have a spaz attack while you're doing it) and end up dumping the bike on the floor.

Remember to mind your head/face/hands while doing it. If you've ever slipped with a spanner/ratchet and smacked your hand on something/ smacked yourself in the head then you'll know what I mean.

One thing I do (although I haven't done it on a bike) is to put a trolley/bottle jack under the bar/spanner handle and then start pumping. Obviously this works well on cars as it has the weight to keep it still, but if you get someone to sit in the bike while you do it, it should work the same.

The pressure exerted on the nut is going to be pretty big, and it should come off no trouble. But if you start lifting your mate/bike up with the jack, it's time to set fire to your bike and get a new one.

Thumbs Up
