Spent hour and a half waiting for the AA to come, I'd run out of fuel Thumbs Down

Felt engine running lumpy and thought it was low fuel, so for the first time ever I reached down and turned the tap to Reserve (or at least I think I did, see below) but nope, no help.

Two possibilities. The tap doesn't work properly, or I've been a twat and been setting it to run on Reserve ever since I've owned the bike thinking it was main tank

So can anyone confirm the status of the fuel guage (on my CG125) in this pic:

https://ccgi.pendulum.plus.com/fuel.jpg

I've been thinking that's main tank, and to get Reserve I have to turn it down fully, with off being "in the middle" (handle horizontal)

Pointing up is usually reserve, down is normal. I think.

Yep, your just on normal 'fuel on' from the main tank, a turn to the left would be 'fuel off' and then up is reserve Thumbs Up

What Chris said. The pointy bit of the tap (at the bottom on that pic) is the bit that points to what position it is in. In that picture it is pointing down and is in the 'Res' position, a 90 degree turn anti-clockwise would turn it to 'Off' and a further 90 degree turn anti-clockwise would turn it to 'On'.

Thinking On my xr 125, which is similar, the down position is fuel on, just like the one in the picture.

Thumbs Up

Should have a little picture on it, point the arrow to the picture of the bowl that's full of fluid, on the bottom of the tap should be a bowl with only a little bit of fluid in it which is reserve.

On my CG there were no pictures. Just as I described:

Down - Res
Middle - Off
Up - On

It's really that simple.

I think people in this thread need to remember that fuel taps can be either way. The RXS is the opposite layout to my CG125.

Chris is right. Thumbs Up

Ahh I see Thumbs Up

I would have thought they would all be fairly similar, even across makes and models! Obviously not.

Thumbs Up

If you shine a torch onto the tap it says the positions on it.

On my 2001 CG it's

Fuel
Off
Res

Turning the tap anti-clockwise will put the tank on.

Turning the tap clockwise will put the tank onto reserve.

https://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s383/TomHanley/IMG_0538.jpg?t=1336762066

If you've used all your fuel up then you should check and clean the fuel filter by turning the tap to off and then undoing the bolt on the bottom of the tap.

While you have the filter out try the tap in both positions to check if the reserve/main pipe is blocked. (assuming you now have petrol in the bike).

Thanks all, especially TomH, I will check the fuel filter and tap in the morning. I did try looking closely for markings on the fuel tap whilst trying to keep myself amused for 2 hours at the side of the road but unfortunately mine's too old & grubby to really make the markings out, perhaps if I cleaned it well I might be able to see! But those pics are really helpful and confirm what I've been doing wrong Laughing

Strange that the CBR125 doesn't have a reserve, same engine isn't it? Just no tap that I've ever seen.

Bit fkin pointless if it's drawing fuel from the same tank, it's like a Blonde's accessory.

Does it have a fuel gauge / light? If you have a gauge or a light, you don't really need a tap.

If talking about the CG and the CBR no the engines are different one is an air cooled push rod engine the other water cooled SOHC, anyway the Japs seem to enjoy making minor alterations that seemingly yield no practical benefit.

Oh and I do believe the CBR 125 has a fuel tap.

I don't think any bikes actually have a separate reserve tank... It's to let you know you're low on fuel, not to actually switch tanks.
