Hi, got all my gear and now need a lock

I can't pay too much, preferably £20 but 30 at a push, but In the future this would definitely get upgraded

Iv been looking on amazon because I have a voucher I can use,

What do you guys suggest?
Quite a few ones that are 2.5KG but about 1 metre

At that sort of money the chain will be a deterrent to the casual thief rather than a game stopper for the professionals (TBH all chains are to an extent - better ones are just harder to hand crop, can still be cut other ways).

In which case, you just want to get the one with the thickest links you can find. 12mm+ thick links look substantial, below 10mm or so looks comically thin to be securing a motorcycle with.


However, if I only had £30 to spend on a chain and lock I'd buy some grade 80/100 load chain on gayBay. It is impossible to get a tougher motorcycle chain for the same price.

This stuff is £20 a metre, has 16mm toughened links and will be an utter ball ache/impossible to crop by hand:

If you can find it second hand then it will be peanuts/free as it is essentially scrap metal to industry after a period of use.

To be fair the chain is only as good as the lock holding it together, so you will need to spend a lot of money for a good quality lock...
I think an alarmed disk lock would be a better investment, and a cheap thinner chain just as a visual deterrant

Just make one decision on your own, just once, you might like it, who knows

Personally I used a £40 "mammoth" chain
and a kryptonite bicycle D-lock

The d-lock is great because its hardcore and easy to carry around, I just attach it to my top box rack thing[/quote]

As everyone here has said it's possible to get some good quality chain within your budget, but probably not with a decent lock as well.

Personally I have an alarm, a cheap chain and padlock, and a disc-lock, and just accept that if a professional thief should decide they're desperate for my bike - it will be going along with them. The security should hopefully enough to deter scrotes and casuals, which is all any security can really do, although some may do it more effectively.

I bought a disk lock (bright yellow with bright yellow minder) for £20 and a chain and lock for about £40 from J&S to make it "look" secure. It's got a cheap-ish alarm on the bike too which makes a noise to try and deter the robbin' AR$£ bandits. We also found out yesterday my mate's car exhaust can set the alarm off so it's quite sensitive!
