 Posted: 15:21 - 31 May 2012 Post subject: Can this be welded - now * SORTED * - thanks |
 |
|
Thought the old Kawasaki GT550 was sounding a little fruity this morning.
Just checked and found exhaust snapped.
Rear section, it's a Motad 4 to 1 system.
Just wondered if it can be welded in the short term (cash flow problems) to get me by. It's my default work transport atm so can't afford (literally) to be without. Can also consider somewhere in Leeds (east side, Harehills, Cross Gates, etc. preferably) if any recommendations.
I know a complete new system is around £316 (wemoto - same as motad list price) and I can't source just the rear (after in becomes 1 from 4). Not much I can see on eBay (looked for gpz550, z550, etc.). I know an old GPZ550 is sat at a repair shop but he's wanting to sell who'd bike rather than bits. So how much would that be?
Any recommendations welcome.
Please excuse fone camera pics...

I have repaired a motad with a similar problem, but it wasn't just a simple weld - the metal had rusted very thin, too thin to weld, particularly with a chrome coating.
I fixed it by sleeving it with some mild steel pipe I had, in the same internal diameter of the external diameter of the exhaust. I cut a 1 inch sleeve, then cut it into two halves (2 half circles). I clamped the sleeve sections tight around the crack with a few mil of space at the joins, welded them together, then left it clamped to cool. It tightened up as it cooled, and left me with a good tight seal.
Ugly, but functional. Better to sleeve on the outside, if you sleeve on the inside you're creating a restriction in the airflow. |
