Riding without tax and MOT

I'm moving house so need to ride my CB-1 40 miles or so to my new place. It's been sorned for 4 months and the MOT has run out so I can't tax it (it will be insured though). The plan is to book an MOT near my new house so I can ride up there without tax. This is not just a scam to move the bike, I am actually wanting to put it back on the road so I can sell it Laughing

As I understand it there is no actual provision in the law that states the MOT centre must be the nearest one (although many people seem to believe that).

Anyone know if that is the case?

I believe it's just the fact that you ARE on your way to a test centre that covers you, no specifics.

It is legal to ride a bike to an MOT test centre without tax or MOT but you would need to have the appointment card with you to prove it incase you get pulled over, other than that the lack of a tax and MOT disc would give the game away.

I realise it's legal to ride untaxed to a pre-booked MOT...the question does it matter that it's 40 miles away?

What your suggesting is fine, just have the number of the test centre handy just in case you get pulled. Lets face though the chances of getting pulled over are pretty slim. Thumbs Up

They tend to try and argue that it should be a station close to where you live, although IIRC the law is that it must be taken "straight to the MOT station" - i.e no stopping at mates houses etc...

If it's in roadworthy condition (i.e will pass the MOT), then I think you'd be pretty unlucky to get too much shit - although obviously they can try it anyway...

Yeah, the bike is 100% sound, no advisories last time and it's only done a handful of miles since.

I would say I'm fairly likely to get stopped as it'll flag up on the ANPR system presumably. If that happens I'm pretty good at sweet talking officers of the law.

I shall just remind the constable that they should be out catching real crooks then punch him square in the nose and run off shouting "fuck you pig, I ain't going back to the big house" whilst the Police, Camera, Action cameraman chases me down the road.

Wouldn't it be less hassle all-round to just treat it as a wardrobe and shift it like the rest of your stuff, & worry about MOTing the thing after?

When do you need it moved by? I've got a trailer but I've got to go see this bloke in Huntingdon to get a couple of small brackets made up before I can fit the towbar to the car.

I take it that if it's off to MOT, you've changed the tyres since that pic BTW?

Needs to be gone by Wednesday really but my friend lives 100yds down the road so if you want to pick it up from his at a later date I'd be unlucky to get stopped pushing or riding it there. It can then sit on his drive for a week or so until he starts to get pissed off I should think Laughing

Only kidding...basically it was my commuter for a year or so then I decided I wanted to get into trackdays so bought the super-duper tyres and good brake pads and did 2 trackdays on it. I realised I enjoyed it more than sex so I went and bought the ZX6R to use as a trackbike.

It is pretty good on track; handles and brakes very well...not enough power or ground clearance for fast group but it was the quickest bike in novices for the 2 I did on it.

Didn't seem to do it any harm but you can have a look and listen and decide for yourself. It runs a hell of a lot sweeter than my ZX6R Laughing

EDIT: Actually if you look at my You Tube channel and scroll right to the beginning there's a video of it at Bedford from before I bought the ZX6.

Yeah, they're really good fun on decent tyres. I was tempted to chuck a load of money at it putting rear sets on etc. but I just figured it was better to buy something that was built for the job and had enough power to at least stay in touch on the straights.

They're really underrated little bikes; amazing build quality, and just enough power to be fun on the road but without risking your licence. Kind of the perfect road bike for me when it comes to enjoyment but as my commute will now be 40 miles on the motorway instead of 6 miles through heavy traffic the lack of a fairing pretty much makes it unsuitable in winter.

Going to 150 section rear tyre with a lower profile improves the handling and you can get a much wider range of radial tyres instead of being restricted to bias ply BT45s (although they're pretty good). I do actually have a BT45 front for it too with a bit of life left in it which will obviously go with the bike if you buy it.

You can get really cheap race scrubs too as they're the same size as many 125 race bikes. Even if trackdays are not your bag I like having that level of grip on the road and they still last ages as it's not the sort of bike that chews them up at all.

There are a couple of other bikes I'm looking out for and will have to wait and/or restore the other bikes in the garage first including another CB-1.

They are great bikes though for sure. It's the only bike I havn't sold after a while. If I can't find a MKII or a 400 Aero soon, I'm going to make my own MKII out of the MKI I have.

No sweat mate, I'm not that fussed about selling it. It's worth so little and they're so hard to find that I'm always tempted to just keep it forever but then it sits there hardly getting used and I end up thinking it's a waste.

Is there much difference with the MK2s? I thought they were basically the same?

I like the clip ons to be honest; it's one of the things that made me want one as I don't like higher bars but not many nakeds come without them.

I don't think I'd want to change the engine as that level of power suits the character of the bike so well and it sounds lovely with the cam gear train whine rather than the cam chain rattle of most inline 4s Cool

It also doesn't start to feel slower than the 600 sportsbikes until higher revs as it's got quite a lot of mid range. Perfect city bike in my opinion as it's narrow and nippy but I'm sure G could explain why an S1000RR is a better choice Laughing
