Hi,
Im trying to charge the battery for
a honda innova 125

the charger I have has the following options

6 volt or 12 volt

4 amp, 2 amp or 1 amp

the charge wires are black and red

do I connect black wire to the negative on the battery ?

Hope someone can tell me the right options

also how long should I leave the battery on charge ?

Blak to neg red to pos................ usually, is it a 12 volt battery or a 6v battery? it should say on the battery.
4 amp= quick charge
2amp= slow charge
1amp=tricle charge

very flat put on 4 amp
down a bit and needs a boost 2 amp
just keeping it topped up 1 amp.

Lower amps = slower charge = better for the battery.

If it has removable caps in the top, take them out and check the electrolyte level is between the max and min marks (don't get any on you, it's sulphuric acid). If it is low on electrolyte, top it up with de-ionised water before you try to charge it.

Leave the caps off while charging, especially if you use the higher charge rates because they can start producing hydrogen gas inside them.

The innova is a press button start honda
but Ive been kicking it for the past year.

You d think the mileage Ive done would be charging up the battery but it does nt seem to.

Maybe the euro rules that we have to have the front headlight on at all times stops me getting the batt charged up ?

If it's been starting and running then the reg/rec is probably fine, but the battery is stuffed. You might be able to recover it with a decent 'smart' charger that will send pulses into it to try and break up the Bad Juju.

Just to check, do you have any electrics at all before you kick start it? If not, have you checked that the main fuse from the battery +ve isn't blown?

SOMETIMES a light comes on to let me know what gear Im in, sometimes the dial is blank.

after a mile or two the lights... and the speedo usually come back on again.

The battery is prob very flat ( though its only 2 years old ) and I cant think that the bike is recharging it.

I did about 100 miles one day and the next day the battery was still pretty flat, no press button start.

Anyway, now Ive found a charger, I might as well give it a go and see if that brings the battery to life.

( Have just checked the battery in my smoke alarm.......... just to be safe !)

It does sound like a dud battery and you need a new one.

I've also had one good result with some careful* dropping of a battery and two that were too far gone.

*I really do mean careful

no! You have probably just gone and cooked the battery

6 amps / 2amps = 3 hrs charge and that is considered a very fast charge.

I know you have been trying to recharge it previously but that has it mate, get a new battery
