I was wondering what can be stuck at the bottom of a leather saddlebag to protect it from exhaust heat either by radient or direct contact.
Would something like this work:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Heat-Resistant-Flat-Mat-For-GHD-Hair-Straightener-/170859884756?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Hair_Care_Hair_Straighteners_PP&hash=item27c80af0d4

Or this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zing-Silicon-Black-Trivet-Heat-Resistant-Pot-Pan-Mat-17-x-17-cm-/140799671560?pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item20c8507d08

It just has to be stuck on the bottom of the bag. Would either of these do it?

Depends how close it is the the exhaust, the end can will get to about 250-300C, I think hair straighteners are about 200C and that heat mat thing has no useful info. Obviously if its a fair way from the exhaust then they will probably be fine.

I have a silicone mat from lakeland that sits in the bottom of my oven all the time to catch anything that boils over.

Best thing is a carbon exhaust because they don't get hot enough to melt the fabric but that won't work well on a virago.

The silicone will stop the saddlebag melting if it touches the exhaust but it WILL eventually conduct the heat through to the contents of the bag if the bag is resting on it.

That said, looking at pictures of 535s, the panniers should finish up behind where the exhaust finishes anyway.

I use silicon baking pans/trays in the oven. No idea how hot an exhaust gets but the oven does at least 220 degrees and no hint of my silicon going floppy or bubbling Smile
Should be ok for an exhaust shield.

I'd give the cleap silicone a try first. If it does stick the stuff, it's VERY heat resistant (I've used it to seal header pipes before) and will peel off if you want to remove it at a later date.

Alternatively, you could always wrap it round the exhaust and hold it in place with a couple of jubilee clips when you have the panniers on.
