Right, not my bike,
just wondering if you can point my brother in right direction

Recently, Brothers Chain snapped while riding.
Admittidly he was being a Pleb on the thing for a 'cool' photo.. Lid'less Shocked

Its been stood mayhaps a month now any yesterday we pulled the side fairing to see the actually damage. Where there chain has snapped its torn into some wiring and cracked a hole the size of my thumb into the thing.

First.. This hole. Its pretty much where the water pump mounts, sproket side bolt hole, is it a dry hollow that he can risk filling, or are there bits that may 'interfere' with that thought.. he is a rough arse

Second, There seems to be two wires running from above the engine somewhere down by the sproket. 'This was infact, wound around said sproket and torn' These wires are Black, and lime green/racing green .. into female connecter block, we cant find any trace of a male side down the bike anywhere.. Generator wiring is alot further forward. nuetral light still working fine, Side stand wiring intact. Is there anything else that should run that way?? Only ask as though the bikes turning over, its no longer firing..

third.. why is it impossible to find a haynes manual for these things?

There is a manual online if it is any help:

https://www.scribd.com/doc/50602570/RF900R-93-98

Also have you got pics of the offending damage?

Look at the state of that sprocket, no wonder the chain snapped it must be more stretched than Lisa Riley's knicker elastic.

No shit. you should see the chain...

Basically, his lack of forsight, he has learnt; 1 the value of replacing sprocket and chain, 2 learnt to replace them both at once

stab in the dark here but could this be for the speedo? some have a speedo that works from the sprocket rather than the wheel..

30 second glance. Speedo is run from Front wheel on cable, thanks for the suggestion though

If the wires go down to sprocket it should either be nutral light switch or oil pressure switch.

From a very poor memory the green is for the neutral and sidestand switch feeding into the interlock circuit. It would explain why it doesn't work but certainly doesn't explain why you think the sidestand switch is working. Confused

Neutral light is fine. ie in neutral, light comes on
outa neutral light off..

Why i think it isnt the side stand wiring? been under the bike. Wire runs undamaged from the side stand up the frame and across to the other side of the bike into the loom, unscathed.

Oil pressure light. Not sure. Where would the wiring originate from?
What i have is the female side that runs down to this part of the bike 'from' The loom.
looking for the male connector side and where it runs into the engine

Welding, covering that hole? Are we agreed there are no direct movng parts within that hollow? is it just a dead space?

aint one out there mate... Sad

best chance is for brother to download manual or sometimes workshop manuals come up on ebay.

best bet is to visit RFOC

most helpful when bike goes tits up.

here i wiring diagram, if thats of any help

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/fastfitter/RF%20Electrical/RFwiringdiagramcoloured.jpg

one guy had similar issue chain snap, and he stripped bike to do other works while off road.

here is pic of his wiring.

https://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab310/illmor/rf900/Resto/skladanie/DSC_5558-1.jpg

see green/black wire is marked ign (ignition).

( green box cover is starter relay by left side of battery )

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=85394

if i read schematic right it is the wire to signal generator.
no expert so may be well wrong.

https://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1996%20RF900R/55.gif

best ask at the owners club, imho

Ok so it must be the wire to the signal generator.

Yeah I know it is on the opposite side of the engine but the chain 'might' have caught it, pulled it out and then fed it around the sprocket.

Well you never know Wink

Hahaha while I was looking for a photo someone else posted. See, wasn't such a dumb idea.
