normally the top half of the cylinder is where theres a charge that expands to pressurise the contents
I remember stripping the ones in our work to have the charges replaced years ago, something like this

Ah damnit. I appreciate the info though!
If I did choose these as a tank, It won't be easy. I'll have to nip the top off, and run some drill holes around that plating so fuel can go through and make use of all of the space.
Then just reweld it all.
Cheers. |

Hm Couldnt find any cheap of those afff ones, so got myself some water extinguishers.
It has to be cut and welded anyway, so I'll just buy a long drill piece attachment and just put a load of holes in the plate in the middle.
Will also remove the gas canister. I wonder how its held in there... Welded?
hardest part will be welding it all up afterwards!! |

^ Fantastic. I'll unscrew the top and run various drill holes through that plate. Pretty unfortunate that stupid canister will be taking up space, I will try and remove/puncture however.
Plan of action is cut a hole in the top for a cap, if the tanks are alloy, I shall cut up a pitbike tank, and use the top half with the cap and pop rivet it into the tank with an O ring to seal it. And two universal taps underneath (normal and reserve).
If tank is steel I should imagine I'll get it welded, but I want rat style so pop rivets sounds good.
I'll be running two of these side by side.
Cheers for the help. (I'll be throwing up a project thread with pics in soon anyway) |

My extinguisher looks very similar to that one, but having took it apart, theres no gas cannister in there. Always thought they were charged with compressed air, but i cant find any valve on it |

the AFFF ones we used on ships were simply hollow bottles, with a long pick up screwed in the top. just below the handle there was a 'tyre' valve which we pressurised to 10 bar with a diving cylinder. bloody brilliant when someone had cross threaded the top and went to pressurise it frosty the snowman anyone? ____________________ Past - 1988 honda revere 600, 1996 kawasaki gpz500s, 1999 Yamaha R6
