For high movement, low load applications (like wheel bearings) I'd use LM grease.
For Low movement, high load applications (like suspension bushes or brake pivots) I'd use Molybdenum disulphide grease.
For stationary parts I don't want to seize, I'd use copper grease.
For hydraulic seals on brake pistons I'd use red rubber grease.
For waterproofing of electrical connectors I'd use dielectric grease or vaseline.
I did a howto on my rusty old H100:

These are specific for water resistance.
General Purpose grease is soap based Base oil mixed with soaps. Soap absorbs water therefore GP grease is not really suited to wet applications and a more specific waterproof product would be better.
If it's something that gets regular greasing then maybe no need as the wetted grease would be pushed out by the fresh grease.
Boats like WP grease as it is more resistant to water and sea water is full of salt. Good for chips bad for arteries and machinery. ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

I'd go for the LM as well, except now it's called Castrol Multipurpose Grease. ____________________

Teflon (polyethelcloromethanhydroboricanodonic:11 ) based is good.
LM is Lithium and Molybdenum which are the important additives in General Purpose grease. The waterproof greases don't list LM in their make-up.
Greases are commonly three types.
General Purpose- Used generally
High Temperature- (Modified GP) Used in electric motor bearings a lot.
Waterproof- used mainly around water. Propshaft seals in boat hulls, stern drives, rudders etc.
Aeroplanes use even more specialised stuff due to cold temperature at altitude.
Normally, any grease is better than No grease at all. ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |
