PostPosted: 00:04 - 08 Jan 2013    Post subject: Bike insurers with low admin fees? Reply with quote

As the large number of threads on this topic indicate, we are all becoming / are already well aware of how ridiculous admin/cancellation 'fees' are becoming, mainly from insurance brokers.

So does anyone know which companies (if any), that make at least some effort to offer a competitive premium, offer more reasonable admin/cancellation fees, or by and large don't actually charge them for minor changes (Note: Probably not the cheapest premium, but i suppose anyone can offer low admin fees if they charge totally ridiculous premiums).

Fingers crossed, but not holding out much hope.

My friend is on eBike and they don't charge him anything to switch to a completely different bike (admittedly around the same insurance band). I imagine they'd charge a different amount if you changed to a busa from a cg125 though.

Yup, eBike. Or at least when I last took a policy (last March). Read the T&C's.

I've changed license types, put bikes on, taken them off, swapped them over, and never paid a penny in admin fees. HN125-8 to GPZ500S was a £0 swap, done online in seconds.

This link should get you £40 off.

Be aware that if you claim or find that you have to call them, it'll be a different story. They want everything done online, which is fine with me - I actually prefer that. They also want to see a copy of your license - emailing them a scan or decent picture is fine.

Might have to switch to them from Carole Nash then when my insurance is up and restriction is over in March. I got a competitive premium after giving them some quotes from other insurers but they charge £25 (I think ...) every time I make a change.

Off Topic: Does anyone know if eBike are one of the insurers who accept that you didn't pass your test when you restriction ends...you passed it 2 years before?

I know Carole Nash are reasonable about it but have heard bad things about some insurers cancelling policies because of the DVLA stamping the wrong dates on licences after restrictions end.

I would go back to Carole Nash in a shot as they were really good when I used to change bikes like my underwear. However for some reason a couple of years ago my quote for renewal went through the roof so I changed to MCE.

A couple of weeks ago I renewed my multibike insurance for the Tiger and a fazer for £250. MC direct, MCE, Hastings etc were all around that figure, Carole Nash were over £500 and when I phoned them they wouldn't even offer to try and get close. Brick Wall

eBike always come up trumps for me. When i added the CBR6f to my 125 policy they charged me an extra £200 (quite rightly), then when i sold the 125 and told them, they refunded me £30 which was nice.

Never had them get pissy about address changes or mods.

Cheers for that, but the premium is 3x as high, a shame Sad

Besides which, i'm not quite sure how to answer the 'when did you get your full license' question as i took the A2 test - it's much easier over the phone ("i passed my test on date X, how you record that on your computer system is up to you!").

A2 is a full licence. As is A1 (the 125 licence). HTH Thumbs Up

Surprising that they don't give you an option to tell them that you are still in your restriction period, but from what I can tell, as soon as you tell them it has 33bhp restrictor fitted they charge hundreds more!

Guess that's one of their ways to tell.

Don't see how making a bike slower makes it more dangerous! Shocked

Guessing it all comes down to stats though eh? More people crash when they have the 33bhp restrictor (as they must be new to biking they say) ohhh errrr.

Problem being, i did my A2 test 5 years ago, so i'm not restricted. As far as i'm concerned, i've had my full license 5 years. Some insurers are trying to pretend i've only had it for 3 years.

Ok, the insurance ombudsman disagrees with me...such bullshit though.

So I got my bike license back in 1977 (yes I'm a dinosaur) but I only got my car license in 2007. So when they say for my car insurance, how long have you had a full license (note they don't ask for full CAR license, just full license), does saying 35 years count as fraud Whistle

Yeah I don't understand. None of the websites give an option for '25kW restricted licence' so does that mean I'm not allowed to be insured through any of them until my restriction is over? Laughing

Certainly put me right off eBike and encouraged me to stay with Carole Nash.

eBike are good, but they want a £100 premium over most others for me.
