Trying to make a wheel balancer

Decided what im going to make next is a wheel balancer.

I've bought some bearings already, for skateboard wheels.

Wouldnt mind a bit of input from you guys as to the general height and width it should be. Be nice to make it accomodate most types of motorbike.
What diameter are front motorcross wheels with tyres?
Widest rear wheel?

A motocross front isn't massive bigger than a enduro rear, as the tyre is much thinner. Probably about the same for motocross.

Afraid I don't have specific dimensions.

I find two chairs and a bit of rod does the job fine .

Width 12cm Diameter 65cm
Front
Width 10cm Diameter 70cm

A quick look on google says 27.5" - so concurs with the 70cm above.

I made mine to bolt to the top of axle stands. Just two pieces of angle steel with a recess cut out, bolt two bearings to each. Height and width adjustable - work very well.

I'm going to make one with a proper base.

Just looked a the talon site and they sell 21" rims which also ties in with the 70cm diameter. I will work to that dimension.

Just need the widest road wheel width now.

You can get tyres up to 300mm wide without being specially made.
But that's for poncey cruisers.
Think the Rocket III has a 240 section as standard.

Most normal bikes with tyres chosen for performance will be 200 or under - and then 200 only for the most powerful.

Though, I do have a 50cc with a standard (front!) tyre 210 wide, but that's a bit of an oddity (it's a quad bike tyre.)

so a 40cm gap should accomodate any wheel and market available tyre (and the clamps either side for the wheel)

Seems unlikely you'd need near that - almost half a metre.

Could always make it on a sliding base if you want the option to do the really wide ones.

It may well be cheaper to just buy one. Wheel balancer for £41.99 inc postage.

You could just prop the bike on a stand, remove the brake calliper and chain then do it in-situ.

But if you want specific dimensions you can pop by as I have one that I use for the front wheel of the KTM and back wheels from the R1 (6" rim)
