 Posted: 11:24 - 19 Feb 2013 Post subject: Trading a 500CC for a 125 + cash |
 |
|
So I've been trying and failing to pass my module 1 Bike test on the 500CC bikes, each time I fail on the Emergency Brake and each time it's a costly £60 that I don't really have to spend frivolously. My Honda CB 500S has been sat in the garage for over a year now waiting for me to pass my test to use it but I feel like I am going to continually be wasting my money trying to pass the Module 1, then module 2.
The problem is that prior to my CBT, I've had zilch experience driving on the road, so I'm finding not only the handling of the bike something to get used to (I'm actually fairly good at everything else and have no problems at all in Module 1 apart from that damn Emergency Brake. I'm either too slow through the barriers, take a fraction too long to finish stopping and on one occasion when it was pissing down with rain, skidded a back tire on stopped. It's like, I'm a freaking learner. Come on. I understand why they have to stop you but still it's a bit harsh.
Anyway I was thinking of trading my 500CC with a 125 + Cash just so I could get the road and bike experience, so that when I come back to passing my full license I won't be such a general bike and road newbie.
Would you guys kindly recommend any 125's for me? I have to say that as I already own a 500CC sport-style bike that something in a similar vein is important, although what is more important is the reliability and stability, as I have heard nothing but good about the CB500's
My CB500S is in very good condition too, with a scuff on the engine casing being the only visible defect.
Thank you,
- Chris |

The brake test is just about having confidence and knowing how much abuse you can give the levers before it locks up. Sure you will get it eventually.
Everyone here will say that some experience is good experience, regardless of cc or style, even if it's just being sensible on a scooter and learning roadcraft and fine-tuning your obs.
As hopefully you'll be back on a big bike, I'd just plump for a decent CG, YBR or SR or Vavadero and then take things from there.

Don't sell the bike, just learn to brake for gods sake!!
Adjust the rear brake so that it barely works or the pedal is far below its normal position so you can't exert enough pressure on it. ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

Seriously just 'pretend' to use the rear brake, don't put any pressure on it at all That's what I did ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

Hi pal
I would stick with the 500 a chap I sat my mod 1 said he had failed it 16 times !
You want to practise with a friend on a unused car park getting him to stick his hand up randomly.
My instructor told me to imagine squeezing an orange for the front brake you gradually press harder and harder to squeeze all the juice out (apply this method to the front brake) and to lightly press the back brake.
Remember the front brake stops you quicker as the suspensions travel takes some of the speed. Also make sure you do your life saver checks when you stop.
Hope this helps

Then for the love of god, don't trade down from a 500 to a 125.
Your CB is designed to be just about the easiest bike to ride, ever, and is way more stable than a 125.
Man-or-woman up, throttle on, throttle off, front brake only, pass. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I did write a post offering to swap for my varadero 125, but you'd go pass your test and want to swap back.
I used to brake mainly with the rear before going to do my tests, during a practice test I managed a 6ft skid during which I released and re-applied the rear brake which my instructor was quite impressed with.
What I was taught to do was to brake with the front first, then just drag the rear a bit to assist. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Hi mate, got a couple issues with your post - he failed 16 times? At £60 a pop that's £960 - the cost of a decent 500CC motorbike.
And secondly you don't have to do life saver when you stop, or at any point during the mod 1, you just have to do visibility checks each time before you set off in any direction :3
My plan is to basically trade the bike for a 125, get good, then in a few months sell the bike and re-buy a 500.
Thank you all for your help so far |

In which case, how much were you looking to get for your 500cc?
I'm hoping to sell my varadero for enough to cover buying a 500cc, restricting it and insuring it.
Where abouts are you?
If you're skidding a 500cc bike, you're probably going to skid a 125 and not reach the required speed, even on the varadero you have to be staying above 20 on the corner.
If you take it again on a 500cc, keep it in 2nd so you can open the throttle to make speed before braking.
You are aware that if you take your test on a 125, that's what you're limited to aren't you? ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

EFA. One day you'll get too much blood in your adrenaline system, then we can talk about fitting your out for your first pair of slippers.
Getting some experience on a 125 is actually a decent idea, but only because they're trickier to ride. I guess if you can do the stop on a 125, you can do it on a 500+.
It just seems a bit perverse to sell a decent 500 in order to finance it, but then again, that's how I got my GPZ - swapped it for a 125 via Gumtree.
So, er, go for it. Varadero would be a keeper, but any Japanese branded 125 will hold its value and get you some confidence. Slap it up on Gumtree, wade through the dozens of people offering you a job lot of HD-DVD players or a go on their sister, hold out for something decent. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
