I had a look for removing valve springs without special tools and came across this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIhWgWEnNQY
Has anyone else actually tried this? |

Yes. It does work. use the rag or everything slips and the collets fly off into the grass.

A valve spring compressor costs about 5 quid. Seriously.
You need one to put them back in anyway (if you want to do it properly and minimalise valve dropping risk).
I see no point in this method, and either way, using a sliding t bar with the socket on the end and a bit of bodyweight works better, and won't make everything fly out. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Nothing wrong with that method - I've never see it done any other way. You've more chance of firing a collet into oblivion if you use the compressor IMO.
I sit the head on a thick layer of rags (usually a rolled-up lumberjack fleece) to prevent any valve damage and pop them all out in a couple of minutes with a hammer and spark plug socket. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

you will need
an old socket with a quarter of it cut out,
a G clamp
small screwdriver or probe
open the G clamp and place flat side to the valve, place the socket on top and compress the spring, slide collets out with screwdriver, remove tension then clamp and socket slide the spings off and if required the valve out

OK if I could edit MP4's I'd have edited out all the crap, but a couple of videos I've just done for removing and refitting valve springs:
Removing: (Note the lack of hammer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ph3Y9cEDUU
Fitting: (needle nosed pliers just to position the collet) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_8hpMjLma0
Nothing lost, nothing flying around, nothing getting it's brains bashed in.... and more importantly, no buying special tools or adapting tools |

You stick a rag under the valve head. This method has been used for donkey's years. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

It wasn't a 'Mechanic' who showed him that 'trick'.
It was one of those Antipodean Fitter-Welders that they are aye harping on about.
It is a fucking moronic way to do a very simple job when £14 will buy you a tool to do it safely.

Er no, mechanics are the sort of monkeys that would ask someone for advice on how to repair the valve they just clobbered to death. They're unskilled labourer scum that think they can rip people off. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles.
