morning all

wiring up my CG last night notice my indicators don't flash but just (when switched on) are fixed on

im pretty sure the relay made a weird noise once or twice but now nothing....

could it be because i have replaced the indicators an now the bulbs are not the right wattage for the relay?

also

the kill switch doesn't kill the bike, it turns the electrics on/ off. i can turn the engine off with ignition key though

i'm going to take the right switch gear to bits tonight to trace wires (the wires have been replaced at somepoint - not by me!!)

Sounds like the killswitch has been wired up wrong. IIRC some old army Gilera had a stealth switch which cut all electrics but left engine running.

I would assume the relay has knackered itself if indi's are staying on. Only a few quid to replace though so no biggy.

If you've changed the indicators check what wattage the bulbs were originally and what's in them now,

Wrong wattage bulbs can definately cause what's happening to yours,

Just switched the indicators on the city fly and waiting for some 10w bulbs to arrive to match the originals, with the 23w included with the lights they freak out, one stays on, relay freaks out etc.

Purely down to the relay being made to handle 20w a go, as such if I disconnect one of the indicators it flashes normally as it's only drawing 23w which is close to the original.

The indicator flash problem is caused by the way that the relays work. They have a strip made of two dissimilar metals (bimetallic strip)with different rates of thermal expansion so that when they're heated, they bend in a particular direction. One of the contacts is wired to this strip and part of the wiring that carries the bulb current is wound round it. When the indicator is switched on, the current flows, the indicator bulbs light up and the wire heats up causing the bimetallic strip to bend until it breaks contact. Once the contact is broken, the bulbs switch off and the bimetallic strip cools down until contact is made again and the cycle repeats.

Reduce the current by reducing the bulb wattage and the strip doesn't heat up hence the relay doesn't operate.

The kill switch sounds like it's wired incorrectly.

Men & Women of BCF lend me your ears........

right finally got a chance to check the relay on my indicators

its rated as :-

23W x 2 + 3.4 (4) W
21W x 2 + 3.4 (4) W

indicators on the bike have 10w bulbs in

is my relay rated at 23W max so i will need 5W bulbs?

or am i getting this the wrong way?

Gracias

That's rated for 2 x 21W indicator bulbs per side + 1 x 4W bulb for the tell tale. Remember you'll only ever have two bulbs plus the tell tale active at any time. Thumbs Up

ohhhh....i getcha,

the bulbs that it has installed at the moment are 10w everything should be rock n roll an flashing...but they dont

does that mean the flasher is dead?

or does it mean that the tell tale bulb already installed on the bike must be higher than 4w ?

cheers

Thumbs Up

if you've got 10w bulbs where they should be 23w that is your issue.

they will not flash correctly as you're only asking for 20w total through the relay when it should be around 46w...

they may actually be flashing very very very quickly to the point they look like they're just staying on..

Yep. As above, you're only using half the rated capacity of the relay which means that the bimetallic element won't be heating and switching. You could do one of two things here:

1. Change the relay for a load independent electronic one.

2. Fit 21W bulbs to the indicators.

Either will sort the problem for you. Thumbs Up
