https://ukfrancebikers.com/2013/03/16/france-compulsory-reflective-stickers-on-all-helmets/

I appreciate that this has been an ignored law for a long time but the french are now said to be applying it as the reflective vest thing has been done away with now. See above link. It is currently in force so anyone going to france soon should consider if they want to risk the fine (and points?) or get some stickers as per the regulation:

"All helmets must have four reflective stickers: one on the front, one at the rear and one on each side. The surface of each sticker must be 18 cm2 and, within each sticker, you must be able to draw a 40 mm diameter circle, or a 12.50 cm2 rectangle with a minimum of 20 mm length."

Also they "should not be removable without damaging the helmet and must remain reflective over time. They must also be water resistant and not interfere with the opening and closing mechanism of the helmet."

I am unable to find anywhere that sells regulataion size stickers in white. I have found some on "Get Geared" but despite them stating they are compulaory in France what they are selling are too small and so would not meet the regulatatory size.

I have heard that new helmets sometimes come with these stickers in the box with a leaflet stating what they are for. I have emailed Shoei asking if they sell the regulatory stickers and if so where (awaiting reply).

Does anyone know anywhere that sells regulaion size stickers to avoid falling foul of the gendarmes when away?

Hopefully the FFMC will get rid of this silly regulation in the same way they got rid of the reflective vests.

I'll make you some if you want.

Let me know sizes and colours. the reflective vinyl is the same as used on some road signs so will last as required.

Unfortunately I've lost the pics, but Bendy did me a lovely scene on the Back of my Shoie Hornet with reflective flowers and 'hornets' (which looked more like friendly bees - ok I was thinking something a bit more manly like some flames etc, but it came out well regardless.)
You can get rolls of the reflective tape on ebay - I've liberally stuck it over bikes I've been doing lots of miles.
One of the ones used on the hemlet was a black tape which only shows up as reflective under head lights etc - and does seem to work quite well. So in the day, it just looks standard black, but at night with a light shined on it, it shows up well.

Thought I'd better comply as they are enforcing it now.

These should meet the need.

I have circulated this round the group going on tour:

https://cgi.ebay.fr/6-BANDE-CASQUE-ADHESIVE-RETRO-REFLECHISSANTE-9x2cm-AUTOCOLLANTE-BLANCHE-BLANC-/180789191773?pt=FR_JG_Loisirs_Scrapbooking&hash=item2a17e0245d

So far I have a request for 3 x white, 1 x yellow and 1 x orange. The "get geared" ones are too small for regs, these are just right size. Personally I'll put up with it but would prefer something a bit more "arty" as my helmet is this:

https://www.ghostbikes.com/products/Helmets-Motorcycle-Helmets/1323-Shoei-XR-1000-Rogue-Motorcycle-Helmet-.html

Can you make the "standard" ones? In different reflective colours? Let me know and I'll pass on to the group. Also any suggestions on something for my helmet to comply with law but fit with design?

Thumbs Up cheers

As to comply they have to be have either a 4cm radius or 12.5cm area rectangle with 2cm length it is always going to interfere with the design, unless the side ones were made to go on the visor, the unused bits on the side that you can't look through anyway.

I'll make some of these standard ones but....

Are these regulation ones actually meeting the regs? If they are 2x9cm as stated but with rounded corners then they are just short of 18cm2 surface area.
I know it would take a real anal tossbag of a copper to stick you on for it but still.

So i'll make mine a mm or so bigger just in case.

I have white, red, blue, yellow and green reflective vinyl here

Thanks marmalade. I prefer rounded corners to squarely cut off but see your point re the regs and gendarmes can be sticklers when it comes to the roast beefs, so your idea to make the sticker a couple of mm bigger to compensate is good thinking.

I'll put the query to the group and suggest we get from you rather than the french ebay site, assuming you're okay to make a batch. So far I have the following wanted:

3 sets of four white stickers
1 set of four yellow stickers
1 set of four blue stickers

Just thinking, would the sticker going on the front of the helmet need to have a curve to allow for the curve of the chinguard of the helmet?

BTW may be worth you putting up a set on ebay as I am sure they'll be others looking for this. Also what's your cost for doing this?

I can specially cut whatever you like but probably best to put different coloured reflective on top of the white rather than cut holes into the white so that it is still a solid reflective block that should still be legal.

Damn, That really is ridiculous

Bunch of robbing gits.

Never liked France only go there on the way to elsewhere and if the chunnel wasnt there would touch the place.

Ill risk tunnel ride up to Belgium, but if I get pulled once Ill never go to Frogland again.

Pity, as I did like the chunnel.

No worries, ordered already anyway. I've also posted a link (currently awaiting moderation) to your ebay shop on the UK France Bikers.com link in my original post above, as a few are saying they can't find anywhere to buy the regulatory stickers in the UK Wink Thumbs Up

I noticed the details on ebay say very sticky may take helmet paint with them if removed. I understand that has to be the case to meet the silly french law, however in reality could they be removed without damaging the helmet's paint? using hairdryer? As at the price your selling I was planning on putting them on when in france then removing them at first opportunity when I leave the country. ie getting a set each trip.

Thank you Thumbs Up

You 'may' be able to get them off but I've tried to get this stuff off after making a balls up of sticking it on and it sticks like shit to a blanket. It is the same stuff used to make some road signs and as you can imagine it is meant to stay there for a while.

I'll stick some on an old helmet and have a go getting it back off.
