Tried the search but isn't working for me at the moment.

How easy would it be for a total novice like myself to respray a bike? I'm talking a simple 1 colour job, most probably black. I want a half decent finish. Simple as sand down, primer, halfords black spray can, then a varnish type layer on top?

Need some wisdom!

Pretty much as easy as that, dust coats and sand inbetween coats with wet 1200 paper.

Hardest thing will be getting weather.

Oh and flys :@

Black is one of the worst colours if you're unsure about the quality of your prep work. It shows up every blemish.

Rattle cans can give an acceptable finish but you really have to put in the work at the prep stage to stand a chance.

What I would really want is red/white, but my confidence levels aren't at all great. When it comes to taping lines, does masking tape suffice? If black is that bad, I'm now more tempted with my more ambitious idea.

Masking tape will be ok providing you dust coat it.

Hi there

I have in the past resprayed a few things Wink prep is the key word. The better the prep, better the finish.

But it is not as easy as it sounds Sad spray cans can be tricky things.

Full respray, Ford Orion, Ford Fiesta with proper spray booth and lots of prep work. Came out looking good Smile

Full Respray rust bucket, Ford Sierra in Hamarit blue from spray cans. Strangely it looked good lol, even after 2 years the rust never came back lol.

In the end practice on something first before touching your bike Wink

mine.

hycote satin black, then a ebay jobbie 2k clearcoat laqcuer.

It's easy, but practise the lacquer on something first!!!!!

For the tank decals, FFS don't remove them, you have to use a heat gun and cut all the paint layers off. Laughing Just sand them down.

Most of the time is prepwork.

Thumbs Up

It's not brilliant but it's good enough for me.

The more time you spend prepping the better the finish, as I said after doing my car with a brush Laughing the prepI did before gave it a glass finish.

Plastidip your motorcycle man... only prepping you will need doing is cleaning the surface of your motorcycle... equipment is fairly cheap, you could get a wagner gun for maybe £30 and paint for say £50 - £80.

Great thing about plastidip is that you can peal it off.

If you're doing it in your garage using retail products then plan on having your bike off the road for a week, and then two more weeks of the slightest contact leaving marks in the lacquer before it fully cures.

If I were doing it again and just wanted a consistent block colour, I'd seriously consider vinyl wrap. Have a look at some how-tos. It looks fairly fiddly, but weigh that up versus coat after coat of sanding and spraying, and the existential horror of getting a run.

Trust me on this, I have a mate who's wrapped stuff and it takes forever, he said to wrap his car it took weeks, let alone you cant touch up repairs. Shocked

Far easier to do what I did, that satin base coat stuff is super forgiving. If it runs, you can literally dab it with a towel and then lightly spray over it again, and v'oila it's perfect.

It's just the 2k lacquer which is weird, really easy to use, but you have to get it close and lay it on quite thick. Took me about 6 hours of prep work to get it all keyed in etc. Then a couple of hours to get 6 coats on, then about 4 coats of lacquer. This was in 5deg a couple of days before we had the snow. Laughing Laughing Laughing Had to leave it in a shed with a fan heater. I reckon had I waited till the summer, it would have come out even better. Thumbs Up

Plastidip it, easier than painting and if you get it wrong you can just peel it back off, very little prep involved in apply it as well.

I've been thinking about doing a plati-dip job on my bike. Anyone know how many cans you need to do a complete bike?

Worth a read

https://cbrforum.com/forum/how-mechanical-40/how-paint-bike-without-compressor-gun-**not-considered-rattle-can-job**-115135/

When it comes to clear coating its worth spending the extra cash on a 2 part clear, especially if its something other than a black basecoat. Make sure you have very good ventilation if you go this route though.

Also, if you are going to put any decals on the tank, they will need to be lacquered over, otherwise the petrol will have them un-sticking is no time.

Me and one of the chaps at work are going to go 50/50 on a spray kit and 10lt of plast paint and see what it is like in a few months time (next 5 week pay day) should be around £150 each. Looks interesting lol. Worth a try just to see how it comes out always wanted to try a matt car or bike before Smile

Cellulose is nice and forgiving! Resprayed the K75 with it (not from cans though), had no issues with running, just a few fisheyes because of silicone glue being used nearby.

Don't have to worry about dropping dead with cellulose either.

with a gun you can get a consistent amount spray on the fairing, you also can spray a wider area.

Fair point, but the cost of buying all the parts vs buying say 2 cans of paint is more than triple the cost.

The question is, is 2 cans enough to cover all the panels on a sports bike?
