Hi all

Got an old suzuki sb200 2stroke im restoring. The old 1982 manual says to use 20w50 oil for the gearbox. Seems quite an old uncommon oil now, would i be best off using another modern oil perhaps, or sticking with the original spec?

Cheers Smile

ATF fluid is normally used in older machines for gear oil.

It's been suggested that it has certain detergents in that will clean and keep the inside of the engine free from sludge etc.

I put ATF in my bikes and my dads BSA Bantom and his Suzuki gt185

There's a world of difference in viscosity between ATF and 20/50. ATF is as thin as fork oil whereas 20/50 is like treacle. Takes ages to do an oil change using the 20/50 unless you warm it up a bit.

Saying that, the ex-mrs used to have an SB200 and we never found a problem using bog standard, cheap oil.

A gearbox isn't the same as something like a four stroke engine with all it's narrow oil ways and need for pressure. On a two stroke, the workings sit in a bath of oil and splash it about a bit.

In short, oil is oil for a gearbox. The only worry is any detergents or friction reduction agents (not usually found in cheap oils) that can have an effect on the wet clutch. If I were you,I'd be going for the cheapest oil I could find Smile
