 |
|
Hi all
Got an old suzuki sb200 2stroke im restoring. The old 1982 manual says to use 20w50 oil for the gearbox. Seems quite an old uncommon oil now, would i be best off using another modern oil perhaps, or sticking with the original spec?
Cheers |

Okay thanks guys, they both also specify 20 50 originally do they? Did you notice any changes when you switched if you recall?
Thanks |

There's a world of difference in viscosity between ATF and 20/50. ATF is as thin as fork oil whereas 20/50 is like treacle. Takes ages to do an oil change using the 20/50 unless you warm it up a bit.
Saying that, the ex-mrs used to have an SB200 and we never found a problem using bog standard, cheap oil.
A gearbox isn't the same as something like a four stroke engine with all it's narrow oil ways and need for pressure. On a two stroke, the workings sit in a bath of oil and splash it about a bit.
In short, oil is oil for a gearbox. The only worry is any detergents or friction reduction agents (not usually found in cheap oils) that can have an effect on the wet clutch. If I were you,I'd be going for the cheapest oil I could find |
