Just before I head off to Spain, the R1 apparently gets above 100 degrees in the current weather which is ~21 degrees.

I just want to confirm that is not too bad.

I've seen over 100 on the CBR and 112-115 on the Daytona once in traffic... but I haven't ever committed to a 2000+ mile trip to Spain on a bike I've not owned for long Laughing

Can't help you there. It's fucking rediculously hot. Old people drop dead in that kind of heat.

Take a hydration backpack and make sure you drink it all by the end of the day.

Sunscreen on any exposed skin.

Have you flushed the coolant to make sure the mixture ratio is correct?

3:2 Mixture of AF & Water is the optimal Razz

60% AF : 40% Water (some people misread ratios)

I've heard that the R1 does run incredibly hot and it is common so i doubt there is anything to worry about Thumbs Up

Well, "normal" running temperature is between 80-120 on most vehicles Razz

Once it gets above something like 115 the fans will kick in...

Have a look in the manual and see what temperature the thermostat opens at.. some only just start opening up at like 98 degree's which is just the start of the coolant flowing around, not the fans kicking in to help cool it.

I once saw al's R6 get to 116 after a blat to Boxy on a roasting august sunday.

Maybe you'll just have to stop and have regular breaks? You should be doing anyway to keep your fluids up.

Personally I'd go for a proper coolant in high temperatures, something like supercool or engine ice. If you do use off the shelf stuff try to mix it with distilled water.

Temperature wise I'd expect it to be running at just over 100 when stuck in traffic and around 70-80 when being ridden. I'd look at flushing the system out as a minimum.

I'll see if I can get some high temp specific stuff.

It was flushed out last week, completely fresh stuff in there now.

My bad.

I thought the 108 was referring to the air temperature you werre expecting in Spain in farenheit, not the engine temperature in celcius.

My gsxr regularly reaches 107, 108 in town while sitting in the 70s when out on the open roads. I've never thought to be concerned by it.

And consider dropping an electrolyte tablet in the drink pouch, being hunched up on a bike with cramp is no fun.

Probably.

My VFR was around 85 when moving, 100-110 in traffic, in 30+ degree air temperature.

Northern Spain was cooler than Seville / Cordoba etc. in the south.

I regularly noticed 105c when stuck in traffic in Monte Carlo a few years ago on the R1.The fan would then kick in and do its bit to drag air through the radiator.

Before I went on the ride to Tuscanny I flushed the coolant system and mixed it 70% distilled water and 30% quality anti-freeze.Water is a far better liquid at moving heat away from hotspots like cylinder heads, hence the higher ratio of distilled water. The anti-corrosion inhibitors in anti-freeze is what is needed with alloy engines. If this was not the case you could run 100% distilled water.

Running a 50/50 mix is hardly necessary as Spain is never likely to freeze down to -30c.Neither is this country for that matter.

I once heard of someone who knew no better and ran his bike engine on 100% anti-freeze Rolling Eyes

Most anti-freeze 'if' it has inhibitor added will only have about 4% which means you get the minimum recommended 2% inhibitor when you dilute to 50:50 (1/2 water 1/2 antifreeze)
Most manufacturers will recommend 50:50 mix (or use their approved coolant)

Ethylene Glycol has a different heat capacity than pure water so an engine can safely work at higher temperatures than the boiling point of pure water at sea-level (100°C) if ethylene glycol is used.
The engine won't melt or come to any harm at above 100°C the coolant only need NOT boil. If it boils then it makes pockets of gas. Gas will not cool the engine and you get 'Hot Spots' which can result in cracking.

I would not phaph with a mixing type. Buy an extended life coolant which has inhibitor and antifreeze Pre-mixed. No doubt and less waste.

Defo flush before new coolant.

Hi

Do you have a radiator cover? If so may be an idea to remove it for the trip to Spain as they tend to make engine run hotter
