I was riding tonight at about 1am and there was a rabbit in the middle of the road. My natural reaction, weirdly, was keep the same line (which would mean flattening the rabbit), let off the throttle, and just cover the brakes. Pretty much what I'd do in the car, coincidentally how I ran over this huuuge rabbit outside my house just an hour earlier.

I don't like the idea of slamming on for every single rabbit that runs onto the road because 9 out of 10 times they just run off. Also I wouldn't like it getting stuck under the front wheel under heavy front braking.

Funnily enough had an incident on Tues night/Wed morning; didn't really have time to think but I rolled off the throttle as soon as I saw it in the road, the thing turned back to the hedge where it came from then as it realised I was slowing attempted to jump in front of the bike, instead it ended up faceplanting into the side of my fairing, must have only been dazed as I went back to check and no sign of what could have been my dinner....

(Brool story or what eh? Razz )

So yeah I would just stick to my line and roll off no sudden swerves or braking (in respect to the previous story the road was covered in gravel and dirt from farm vehicles, sudden change of speed or direction would have likely seen me on the deck).

brool cory....

When I was first learning to ride I had a route that I used to practice on. On one section it's downhill, with double twists. The usual confidence > talent caused me to fly down there without a care in the world

One evening as I came down there at full tilt a little rabbit ran out. I went for the brakes and horn at the same time. it just pushed itself lower into the ground. I stopped and it ran off from the way it had jumped out.

I was far too pleased with myself for managing my first proper estop and not ending up in the bushes and not splatting a baby bunny.

I'll always avoid the creatures if I can. Pigeons seem to fly off with a quick toot of the horn but are stupid stupid creatures.

You dont want to be on the front brakes when you hit something soft and slippery Shocked Slow as much as you can before, then roll on throttle so the bikes weight moves to the back wheel.

Think of it like a speed bump, only smaller and filled with blood, guts and shit, neither help traction Thumbs Up

Yep, my thoughts exactly. There's loads of rabbits and pheasants down my road, rolling off the throttle and just hoping the damn thing gets out of the way, bracing for impact and crossing my fingers all at the same time. Not hit one yet Thumbs Up Rabbits seem jump back the way they came from. Pheasants... well, I will admit, I have had to swerve a little to avoid one or two, they really don't move. Stupidest creatures on the planet.

Up here rabbits and pheasants aren't an issue, it's the mutant hares that are the size of small children.

They see you coming and just stare you down, had to slam the anchors on for one the other day.

I came across a rabbit that decided to race my bandit last night. It could have just ran across the road but nooooo, it decided to run up the road infront of me at 20mph into a stretch of road that had walls on both sides.. So i just ran it over.

All these bloody animals are so unpredictable its better to just roll off and keep straight and hope it budges sensing youre oncoming path id think. In the past ive gone to steer around and its ran into my altered path. Another time i braked and it started coming towards me.. Doh!

Come across rabbits all the time and around 50% of the stupid things tend to run straight ahead down the road.

I was riding down a country lane last week, when suddenly this long furry thing (stoat/weasle/ferret) runs out across the road, gets just over halfway across, turns and looks at me and stops in its tracks. At the same time as I rolled off the throttle and took avoiding action to swerve to the left, its bloody mate runs out behind it, it too came to a halt behind his mate and turned to look at me.

So now I have two cute fluffy long things and two pairs of big brown frightened eyes looking up at me saying, please don't kill us, as I approach them Neutral

Thankfully, there was nothing behind me and I was able to slow down enough with the brakes and they scarpered as quick as they appeared.

Unfortunately, the hedgehog I came across the other month, wasn't so lucky. Didn't see it until it was too late. Sad

No matter how many times I revved my engine at one the other week, the stupid prick just stood there being to proud of himself. He eventually skipped like a ponce to the hedge in the end. Perhaps he had a few to many glasses of port.

Go round it?
Example: Rabbit is running from right to left, swerve to the right to avoid and carry on as normal Smile

I'd be more worried about the farmers and landowners chasing them down with shotguns, they take a very dim view of it around here.
