So I thought I would take a punt on a half-done project, a non-runner for 500 ponds. I already own another running 76 so either can break and sell / use parts to keep that going, so win-win really.

good points
* battery good
* has compression
* clean engine
* immaculate downpipes
* standard zorst
* adjustable front and rear suspension
* plastics in good nick
* new C&S + chain
* forks have been rebuilt
* new spark plugs
* new oil filter
bad points
* grim paint job
* bodged in places
* wiring a bit of a mess
* indicator relay fucked
* needs new tyres
* most things loose / rattley
* key snapped off in fuel tank (cunt)
* use of non-standard / wrong bolts for plastics and screen
* hideous grips and bar-ends
First things will be to check it has enough oil, and get the compression tester out. If that's OK get the carbs stripped and rebuild them. I can pretty much guarantee that the o-rings will be fucked or very close to it. If not, then I will consider other options.
Right now it's pissing it down with rain so won't be doing much with it at the moment.

five (hundred) ponds? Bargain!
I've always had a soft spot for those, even though the ZXR, FZR and VFR/CBR were all better regarded. They may have been better regarded, but they aren't GSXRs. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

Well there was a break in the weather so I thought I'd get the tools out.
Tank off, battery + cage out, air filter out, carbs off.
Time 15 mins. Would have been faster but one of the coil cables was routed incorrectly (through the battery cage rather than under it) so had to disturb that to get it out, so meh.
Not looking too bad actually; apart from one obvious botched repair to one wire the loom looks fairly intact. What has pissed me off a bit the fairing's 1/4 turn DZUS fasteners are missing and have been replaced by poxy caphead bolts, so they'll be getting changed.
One thing the previous owner had done is try to lengthen the vacuum pipe with another bit of loose-fitting tube, which is a no-no. Yes it's friggin' tight and a pain, but it's short for a reason.
Carbs; full of shit old petrol that smelt of white spirit and had a lovely yellow tinge to it. I expect the tank to be full of the same crap.
Mileage? A mere 13,200; although the first number is halfway between 1 and 2, so it's either broken or been clocked, or not original. It does have a MPH converter on it so no idea what the actual reading is but given the state of the engine and the downpipes I'd suspect it's bloody low.
Now it's gone grim again outside so I'm gonna have some dinner and maybe pull the float bowls off and have a look-see.

Good morning Jews/Children/Terrorists
As suspected, most of the o-rings in the carbs were either fucked or very close to. On No.3 the float perch ring had disintegrated leaving a tell-tale black stain around the plastic bit. Equally the main jet rings were ruined. Pilot jet ones looked okay but replaced them anyway. Slide holder ones were OEM as they were loose and thin.
On the plus side, none of the bowls were leaking and their o-rings look okay; also the carb rubbers are flexible and don't have any splits. One of the balance port rubber bungs is missing.
The jets themselves look reasonable but will of course be treated to some compressed air to blow them out.
Camera is broken, will try to get a pic but as most know these carbs are the work of the kitten-sacrificing satanists that are Mikuni.

Operation "Start-the-bitch" complete. Imma firin' on 4 cylinders
Engine's quiet and smooth as fuck, not even a hint of CCT rattle. I would normally check the clearances but 1) cba and 2) I reckon they'll be in tolerance anyway. On-choke idle is at 3.8-4k which is exactly where it should be for dis motor. Also pleasantly surprised to find 4 almost-brand-new CR9EIX in there, was expecting a wanky set of shagged EKs.
Now commenceth operation "Make-it-rideable,"now that it's actually worth tinkering with. Pretty certain that the vomit scheme will be going, maybe vinyl wrap in matt white, white p/c wheels and engine covers. Because that would be awesomely gay. Dunno yet.
