Changed the oil in the ER6 yesterday, it's had two oil changes in my ownership, immediately after I got it then a few weeks later as i changed the filter after effectively a 'flush' with fresh oil. Hence they were quite close together. I should've changed it before now really, I've done about 3K and put in a magnetic sump plug at the last change. On the sump plug when it came out were about 3 or 4 strands of what I can only describe as fine wire brush like pieces of metal. 1/2 inch'ish long.

I'm going to change it again in about a month or so and see then. Should I be worried, other than that it's all ok. No issues at all.

About 22, I've had it for 5 months and put about 5K on it.

If there was no swarf in the oil that came out. I'd be tempted to do a couple of changes at short intervals just to check that nothing else is floating around.

If nothing else shows up I'd chill about it

I only fitted the Magnetic plug at last oil change, about 3K, so wouldn't know.

I would not worry about it one bit. Manufacturing debris in the engine is common.

:D manufacturing swarf as it came from the factory....thats a good one.....so they spend all that hi tech when making the engine and then throw in some grinding paste just before it leaves the factory......?

examine the old oil for bits, metal flakes etc etc.............mag sump plugs are a really good idea.........but wont catch alloy swarf etc.......

perhaps a good flush from the top down and clutch basket strip and clean, they can act as a centrifugal crap trap..........pics would be good.

I took a pic, but the phone focused on the edge of the plug so not clear, not the actual swarf, I'll upload anyway.

Look at the inside of an engine casting, they are usually pretty shoddy with plenty of areas with bad casting flash that you can break off with a fingernail.

Was looking at these magnetic sump plugs recently but thought they were maybe more novelty than purpose. Think i'll get one now after reading this. Did you find any fitting issues with the one you ordered or was it a 'perfect copy' Question

It actually came with a K&N oil filter, it's ready for wiring, not of interest to me. Nor the K&N brand, but the two came out cheap and my assumption was brand name rather than el cheapo. Just happened to be magnetic.

No leaks, no issues and didn't need to overtighten to seal. Wrist tight as some of the youtube videos say! Laughing

I've put them on all my bikes, bought from Wemoto, perfect fit.

Never picked up any big bits of metal, but quite often a sort of charcoal grey colour very fine dust/sludge.

In addition to the bits I mentioned, I had some of that sludge. Here is the pic, as you can see camera focused on the top of the oil!

A good investment those magnetic sump plugs. One of my bikes only has a gauze for the filter which is fine for bits of swarf, but not the ground down sludge.

Who said anything about grinding paste? If you can't put forward a decent argument at least stop making stuff up.

If you keep a few bits of this from rattling round your engine, it's worth the cost

This is what magnetic drain plugs are for, it's the microscopic shavings from quite normal wear that tend to form strands due to the magnetic lines of force. The time to worry is when the bits on the magnet are big enough to see as metal flakes.

If your ER gearbox is as 'clunky' as mine this debris probably emanates from there, I wouldn't worry about it. I had a magnetic sump plug in a 750 SOHC Laverda which was as thick as a knitting needle going in and as big as a bumblebee a thousand miles later.. Incidentally for what they cost I always use a genuine Kawasaki oil filter, pattern ones aren't that much cheaper.

Who makes the filter for Kawasaki?
