Pulled over, 3 points £100 fine

Previous week - I had a new chain and sprockets for £160. Mechanic told me I have about 500 miles left on my rear tyre. No worries I thought. I'll get it done next week... Thumbs Down

Fast forward a week, and 200 miles later, I set off on my bike yesterday morning and when I was outside a garage a guy ran out to tell me that my rear tyre looked flat. So I rode to Morrisons to pump it up.

JUST as I got to morrisons and was outside the pump, coppers came in to check my tyre. Well, it had about 4 psi and 0.4mm in the middle of the tyre.

Cops were fine with me, but screw the mechanic who said I had 500 miles left. Although I should've checked it myself, I took his word for it. Middle Finger

I even told the cop I intended (as I actually did) to call up Bpool Honda and get a new tyre sorted this very day. I did that anyway, cost me £140 for a Bridgestone BT-02 and new rear brake pads.

Queue 3 points and a £100 fine. Do I need to contact my insurers immediately? Bike is up for renewal in October.

That is what you get for going to a mechanic.

Check depth, anything below 2mm I'd stick a new one on anyway. 500 granny miles maybe, but start ragging it on cold tyres or doing anything over 50 and you'll start eating the tyre.

I took my S1000RR for its first MoT last month. I knew I needed a tyre but was off to sunnier climes in a few days and planned to replace both when next home. (Money no object).
Any hoo, the mechanic caloled me to say the bike passed but the back tyre never. It had about 0.2mm where someone had scrubbed the last of it off in an overenthusisaciated weekend blast a couple of days before. Embarassed

A bike tyre doesn't take that long to go from fine to fine. Wink

I would have read everything before signing anything. Even if it means sitting on the kerb and holding them up for half an hour while you go through it.
You can get tyre tread depth gauges on eBay for like a tenner, if that. Maybe not bang-on but will give you a good idea.

No excuses really by my reckoning, its so easy to see the rear tyre of a bike and even easier to see if its knackered.

Being the sad type I actually spent some time looking at tyre tread depth gauges and came to the conclusion that most of not all including the digital ones are inaccurate.

If you look at the tread cut out in a motorcycle tyre you will see that it isn't square cut it is radiused (rounded) unlike a car that tends to have a square cut. This is because corners create stress point and would cause pieces of tread to rip off under heavy breaking and acceleration.
Most Tyre tread depth gauges have a square cut end so when used on motorcycles tend to measure the radius not the centre tread depth as to do this the tool end would need to be pointed. This means when the tread is measured it gives a false reading, this false reading dependant on the width on the tread and the radius measurement could be over 1mm so a legal tyre suddenly becomes illegal.

Just a few things worth checking.

Did the officer record the DOT Tire Identification Number?

Was he trained to use the tread depth measurement device that he used?

When was the tread depth measurement device calibrated or tested.

Do you have a photo of your worn tire you can upload?

What was the measurement of the tread depth that was written on the paperwork you signed?

Are we not missing the point wondering about technicalities and all that???

Was the tyre illegal? My guess is that it was and that the points and fine were deserved.
