 Posted: 15:16 - 22 Oct 2013 Post subject: Brothers motorhispania rx50 won't start? |
 |
|
Hey people of the internet, a little while ago my younger brother turned 16 and got a motorhispania rx50 on a 2004 plate, he did his cbt a couple days ago and it has been running fine, but yesterday it decided to be gay and not start, I took the tank off and realised that the spark was jumping from the ht lead (just at the back of the ht cap) onto something else, therefor meaning the spark was not getting to the plug.
I then moved the ht lead away from any metal and straight away it ran again, leading me to believe it was a sparking issue, now however it has decided not to start again, I have just tried replacing both the spark plug and the ht cap with no joy, I have also checked the ht lead etc. And a spark is getting through. Also the plug gave a visible spark against the frame when I tested it.
Now I am stumped, it doesn't even sound like it's trying to start, when I attempt to bump start it, it just turns over, then when the clutch is pulled in it kind of coughs then cuts out.
Any ideas? I would be cry grateful. ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.

Clean the carb? Did you turn the fuel back on when you took the tank off |

Ghetto, I like it
Would probably whip the plug out, give it a quick clean. Pop the carb off and clean the bowl out. |

Not too hard really, remove it and just turn fuel off. Turn carb upside down and remove the screws holding the bowl on, clean bowl and unscrew jets, clean them and make sure they are clear.
Done |

Okay so far I have:
Replaced ht cap
Replaced spark plug
Taken the coil pack off to clean the earth wire
Checked for a spark which there is
I am confused as the problem before was definitely related to the lack of spark, a temporary solution fixed it, but now the exact same problem is back.
It doesn't seem like a carb issue to me, it was running absolutely fine before, and it has the same issues that it had when there was a lack of spark.
I may try taking the carb off. However I am not good when it comes to remembering how stuff goes back on. ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.

You've checked for a spark and it works, so the next thing to check is fueling. Wet plug you say? Well I'd still be taking the carb apart.
I had the rx50 (aprilia) And it managed to have a bent float needle which stopped it from running properly. Worth having a look inside. Clean the jets and the paths behind them with an airline. etc. |
I tried putting a bit of petrol into the cylinder head and putting spark plug etc back (as I did with my old GSXR 400) and it did absolutely nothing, it's as if the kill switch has been put on, but there is no kill switch, no side stand switch, no switch any where else. Might have to give up soon and take it to the garage, however I may have a look at the carb first, which will most likely end in me breaking something if it isn't already broken. ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.

Sorry, newbie first post....
If the HT lead was arcing out to another metal object, there's clearly something wrong with the lead.
I've got an old Shogun which refused to start one evening. You could see the leads arcing out to the engine block. Swapped the leads and it's been fine ever since.
Chopping the end off the lead wont really help. If it's arcing out, the insulation isn't doing it's job. Was the lead soaking wet when it was arcing out?
You can buy HT lead for a couple of quid a metre on Evil bay...

When I changed it on my 2 stroke race bike, I had to pop the plastic snap connectors to open up the bit of the coil where the lead fits. I sealed the leads in with a bit of silicone sealant just to make sure it was waterproof. |

This is what I believed the issues was, however with the new ht cap came a rubber seal that goes over the ht lead, I have attempted starting it in the dark since and it is no longer arcing on anything, I'll probably replace the lead anyway, but I can't see this being the issue really. ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.

I'm not sure why they suddenly break down. Mine had no visible breaks in the insulation, maybe it arcs because the lead isn't conducting as well as it should. Perhaps the coil end isn't too good?
Either way, from what you've said about the lead arcing out, it definitely needs replacing. Good luck! |
