I'm thinking of getting this:
https://www.maplin.co.uk/volcanic-heat-heated-fleece-vest-large-854445

has anyone had experience of using something like this on a bike?

It is 9 volt, so I suppose I could power it from the bike somehow? :S

Mmm, wonder how long the batteries last if you used it often. Are there any reviews on the maplin website?

Maplins don't say what the power is, but something like this might power it from your bike:

These were going for £7 last week from Maplin, I missed out so now won't buy one on principle. Laughing

Oh, hello.

I got one of the 9V ones last year.

Running it directly off of the electrics (~14.5V with the engine running) = OW MY NIPPLES.

So I just this weekend wired in that exact converter (a couple of quid from China) and...

CAPACISPLODE!

Nope, fail. Either I got a bad one, or the vest is drawing way over 3A. The inside is a solid blob of resin with components embedded so I can't see what else is in there, but what exploded looked like a capacitor.

It won't cost you much to find out, but duck and cover before you power it up.

They will have probably aimed for about 5A at the 9v.

45W seems about right for the initial warm up.

So running that same resistance circuit at 14.4V gives you 8A.

:edit: looking at specs for other heated items of clothing, they do seem to aim for about 50W from a vest and about 80W for a jacket.

You could always just stick something like this in and put it somewhere where it isn't going to melt a hole through your body.

Right, i'll buy one of Maplin's vests, and then when I think that my nipples are ready, buy some of China's finest, which I will wire into a cigarette lighter plug, to fit into my socket Wink

Hi Jonathan i bought one of these from Maplins "May not be the exact " same one" a couple of years ago.Worn with a tee shirt underneath it and a fleece over the top.The heat was hardly noticable,I then tried it without the tee shirt only a fleece on top,It was uncomfortable too warm. The battery pack with the on off switch was in an inside pocket of the vest which had to be opened to either turn on or off resulting in any heat gained being lost. You would be better investing in Good quality Thermals .Francis
