Hi all,

I was out on the bike last weekend and noticed that i would try shifting from 1st to 2nd (2nd to 1st) and no matter what i did or how hard i changed the bike would stick it in neutral making me rev the tits off it when i released the clutch, looking like a douchebag. i end up having to double tap the lever to get it to engage.

Am i doing something wrong here or is it a sign of something not right?

Its a 2013 Yamaha YBR 125. barely 400 miles on the clock.

It should get picked up on its service but it's a really easy 2 minute job mate

Stick a ruler transverse from the handlebar end out towards the ball on the end of the clutch lever. Measure the amount you can move the ball out away from the bar and back into its resting position. It should be about 15-20mm

If you need to adjust it, under the rubber boot on the lever pivot point you'll find a lock ring adjuster. Slacken the lock ring off, and turn the inner part until you get the right amount of free play. Tighten the lock ring up again and you're done.

400 miles! The gearchange mechanism hasn't even had time to bed in yet. Start to force things and its be crap gearchanges forevermore.

Ensure you run some lube down the clutch cable once the rubber boot has been pulled back. I used 3-1 initially then a few drops of clean engine oil. It'll make a world of difference.

Just a small tip...
Clutch lever play between a cold engine and hot engine differs, as with engine tickover speed, it's best adjusted when the engine is hot Smile

Slack chain

YBR's are a real sod for it, when the chain goes slack the gears dont quite engage propperly and it'll usually ping out and go straight into neutral.

That's when I know my ones needs lubed and adjusted.

Check the chain tension once every few weeks but it shouldn't need too much adjusting if it's been cared for, cleaned and lubricated properly

Would still check the free play too

Where's it stored when not in use? Do you clean it down if it's been out in bad weather etc?

There's no exact science to chain maintenance but the basics are if you've covered the chain in road film and grit, without it being lubricated properly, and don't clean it down, then it'll rot, run dry on the rollers and stretch MUCH faster than a chain that's been cared for. In that scenario, you'll be adjusting it loads - and replacing it very quickly too.

To give you an idea, the last time my chain needed adjustment was circa 2000 miles ago. I do check it for lubrication and condition every ride though

Its stored in a garage, not heated.

I haven't cleaned it yet, not really needed to however it was rather wet the last time i was out in it. I have lubed the chain twice, once few weeks before i went out on it and second after i brought it back from a ride out.

I agree with Iain, i had an 06 Ybr and had the same problem occur until the chain was tightened and lubricated, also with the cain tightened, gear change is much smoother

I found that my YBR was popping out of 2nd for no reason at all and leaving me in neutral. I found that difficult to select neutral and also changing down to first, whether moving or not, was getting difficult and frustrating.

Adjusting the clutch cable fixed all those issues and it just takes 30 seconds.

Slide the rubber guard down from the clutch lever to expose the adjuster nuts. Undo the lock nut on the clutch cable - the big disk shaped nut next to the clutch lever, then turn the adjuster, which sits inside the lock nut. Just try turning it one whole revolution. Tighten the lock nut again and then give the bike a go, see it if has helped. If it did not help try turning the adjuster nut the other way.

It's easy enough to do this while out on a ride, but not while you're moving, OBVIOUSLY.
