Especially in the darker mornings and evenings, where the potential for SMIDSY is increased, what is the collective opinions on Helmet cams?

Was thinking of getting one as a pre-santa treat for myself, but not sure if it is worth it.

I have looked on E-Bay and can pick up a nice little unit for about £50, 1080p, Li Ion rechargable from USB, 32GB SD card (or little one), several hours of recording.

In the event of accident, is any footage obtained from these admissable as effectively, you are recording pople without their permission?

Anyone got an personal experience of using them and either getting results in the event of an off, or told that they can not use the footage?

Cheers

Mike

Convictions have been secured with the footage so there shouldn't be an issue of using one.

Equally this video wasn't good enough and the driver wasn't charged due to "lack of evidence" Shocked Rolling Eyes due to some legal loophole because he wasn't asked if he wanted a solicitor when he was questioned so his admission wasn't worth shit in court.

I've got one and It's great. Nice to have an independent witness and they are admissible in court just as CCTV etc is. I've never been to court but the police were particularly interested in the footage of one of their cars nearly knocking me off my bicycle Laughing Her inspector was not impressed, I can tell you that.... If the person being filmed is in a public space, you can film whoever the fuck you want.

You could try writing some disclaimer in small print somewhere on your person or bike?

Still undecided about having a camera, maybe when I get a bike that's worth more than 50p.

You and me both. I remember the first time I watched it (I'm a member of CycleChat where at the time Magatom was a member as well, he's since left or at least doesn't post) and I physically winced at it.

I'm surprised that they couldn't do anything with driving like that even with the legal loophole. He got away punishment free even with that evidence.

It's not even about the value of your bike, having a cheap bike doesn't stop somebody knocking you off and really hurting you. It's the difference between a hit and run and a hit and run with a reg plate on video. My pushbike is worth about £300, so not the most expensive of things (although I've got £180 wheels and nearly £200 worth of accessories Laughing) but it's the best investment I've made. £150 (which is how much my camera was) is worth potentially catching somebody over not and being injured for the rest of my life with no closure.

All I'll note is that £50 may be exactly the exact wrong price point. Not enough for a good bullet camera, more than you have to pay for a budget one. I'd suggest having a look at Techmoan, he covers loads of cameras in some depth. £50 might get you the recommended SJ1000, but helmet mounting it would be problematical.

I have one of them and mount it to my helmet like below, the mount included is a lot sturdier than techmoan makes out in his video. It does look pretty stupid and bulky but its still does its job.

Cheers guys,

Was looking at a bullet cam rather than the big ones, so might just increase my budget and look for one of those.

Thanks again

Are any of these helmet cameras good in low light?

The really properly expensive ones are "less crap" than the others but pretty much none of them will pick up a reg plate at night unless you live next door to the sun. Laughing But then again if you hardly ride at night it's not an issue. Mine doesn't even pick them up properly during the day unless I've got it set to 1080p (rather than 960 or 720p) as I found out to my cost when some old fella nearly made me a bonnet ornament.

The ones that will pick up stuff in low light are ridiculously expensive but if it's worth it to you then that's what matters. I believe the newest (newer at least) Drift cameras are quite good in low light but I don't know about any others.

FYI have a look at sickpup's thread Cameras for insurance purposes. The one he got is bike mounted.

In that thread there's also posts from Rogerborg about how he bike mounted one of the cheapie cameras.

IIRC problem with bike mounting is waterproof of power connector.
You also need auto start and loop recording modes on the camera.

There's YouTube Night Demo Roadhawk Ride from sickpup. When number plate not reflecting headlight can be read ok IMHO.

In fact I'm impressed by this and I want to save up and get one. However, too close to Xmas and have other commitments to indulge myself atm.

HTH Thumbs Up

Drift HD Ghost here -
In ideal conditions, yes: https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/capture_168.jpg

Screenshot from footage the other day, 10mph traffic/filtering.

In less than ideal conditions however:https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/capture2_118.jpg And things get a little blurry
Same journey, 30mph, slightly darker road. You can just about make out its a white Ds3, and in the video its clearer (I paused and did a screengrab)

That is 'as-is' straight out the box, 1080p. You can play around with exposure which I've seen some people get pretty good results with the Drift. Most of my footage comes out closer to the 1st image than the 2nd, most numberplates are still whited out though. I believe the newly released HD Ghost S has improvements for low light.

Thanks for the replies on low-light. No point me getting one yet I think as the commute home is in darkness.

Most of the footage is acceptable, the video looks a lot better than the screenshot suggests.

If I remember, I'll play around with the settings and up the exposure, then upload those pictures from my commute later tonight, see if I can get a bit more detail in the pictures.

I've been using the new(ish) Dogcam Bullet HD 2 on my daily commute for the last couple of months and I'm really impressed. It's expensive at a couple of hundred notes, but does 1080p, works well at night and is small and relatively inconspicuous on my lid.

I'll do a little review when I get the chance and throw up some screenshots and a bit of cut down vid.

I recently purchased the roadhawk camera based on Sickpups thread and subsequent offer at Halfords. Although the camera may not always be able to get the registration at night it will still provide evidence as to who was at fault.

So far I am impressed with the camera and really wished I had one 3 years when I was involved in a hit and run. The main feature I like is the fit and forget nature of the camera and that it is powered from the bike.
