I may or may not have been observed by a pig-inna-van doing around 50 in a 40 zone. No kittens were killed as a consequence of this maverick behaviour.

Does anybody know what sort of range their speed guns have? I must have been at least 250 yards away when I spotted them and deployed the anchors, as I've seen them there before.

No points or convictions so id only have to do the speed awareness course, I'd just rather not.

They use lasers. If you're line of sight, they can get you.

You might be lucky. 49 indicated = more like 44-45 actual = not prosecuted in forces that folllow the ACPO guidelines (10% over +2mph)

fyi, you now have to declare speed awareness courses when getting insurance.

robbing bastards added 150 onto my car insurance this year.

so if the sac is more than the 3 points £££ wise, your better off just taking the points cos it'll cost you the same in insurance increases.

I maybe wrong, but I don't think they have anyway of checking.

Whereas I don't doubt that they do ask you to declare it, they can fuck off if I'm going to.

I have no convictions, if I choose to undertake an educational course, its no business of theirs..

thats great, bar the fact the police keep a record of it.

how long before thats for sale to the highest bidder.

your fucked if you do and fucked if you dont.

and seeing as that insurance companies are allowed to make it up as they go along, and you've got section 1b of;

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2012/6/section/4

which i'm sure they could do to you retrospectively 5 years down the line.

If you got lucky, they might have missed your numberplate as you went past, or been aiming at a different vehicle. Usually they aim for cars preferentially since they get a reading off their front plate and get the reg at the same time, but with motorbikes they either have to swivel around to get your plate or correlate the speed gun footage with their dashcam footage to see you from behind.

I did a course last week and was advised by one of the instructors to tell the insurance company f'ck all.
Chris could, though, have a point about plod selling details in the future.

Again, completely true.

However the FAQ for the course provider I recently went on states that my details are kept on a the ACPO database for 'road safety research purposes' only. These details will only be given to the police, and only if they are considering offering me a course in the future.

If my details are sold to insurance companies, then the AA will be in breach of the DPA.

Obviously this is all hypothetical, I would absolutely increase my insurance premiums by admitting to attending a training course even though I have been convicted of nothing. My previous post was nothing but bravado and boyish showing off officer/insurance wanker*.

*Delete as applicable based on whoever may be considering prosecuting me for insurance fraud.

Details were only previously held by local forces, so ACPO Plc holding them is already a slippery slope.

Insurance fraud is a crime, so they're fine to disclose that information.

Fortunately, Kitten Kourses are moneyspinners for the ACPO Plc ranks, so they have a literal vested interest in telling insurers to sod off.

I suspect I'd forget.

Rogerborg is spot on. The course providers are massively fucked off with the insurance companies for loading the premiums for course attendance, especially when the main selling point is no impact on your insurance..... Now it is almost always better to take the first three points, as it will stiff you just as much as the SAC. Of course, that is if you tell them..... Having said that, several people have reported their insurance premiums reducing with the addition of three points Laughing

If I had done two SACs in the past, I wouldn't be declaring them........but obviously I haven't Wink

It's a lie, I'm from Leeds Surprised

The last I heard with regard to insurance was that they ask if you've been on the course if you try to claim.

Always wondered, with these vans if you're on a bike coming towards it speeding and you're obviously in their sights, but then slow down as you go past [the point at which they can read your plate], unless you're pulled shortly after by a car etc, are you essentially off the hook. Or do they take a picture of the rear of passing bikes that were speeding, and its enough evidence to get a conviction if they have front-video of the speeding Thinking

Hi

They used to just turn around and read the plate as you went past. No doubt they got it wrong much of the time but it would still be accepted by court without other proof.

Now I think most have a small video camera pointing in the other direction (small dome, like a shop cctv camera).

All the best

Keith

If you spot them from a distance away slow down and hope for a turning you can escape down before you reach the paedo in the 'safety' Rolling Eyes van as more and more of them have a small camera that will get your plate as you pass. Or if on a dual carriageway try and position yourself next to a HGV / LWB van etc as you pass the scamera van then overtake the HGV / LWB van etc and pull in front of it and use it to shield your number plate from the camera.

Thumbs Up

Overtake the car in front as you pass the van - ie use the car to shield your plate... possibly... I heard somewhere... or dreamed it...

This works excellently when commuting and you have a bag Laughing

Just pull over and strap it under your seat, then when passed the van, pull over and remove it Wink

One of these could come in handy in such situations. Don't get caught with one fitted though.

I heard that in America they point real guns out of the vans.

I made that up.. but thinking about it, it could be true. Neutral

I don't think that if you commit insurance fraud the AA are indemnified from being in breach of the DPA. Both parties would be in breach of the law.

..but than as you say later - they have a vested interest not to disclose the information in the first place.

"the prevention or detection of crime".

Fraud is a crime.

Where's the confusion?

The DVLA happily disclose our details for civil torts, let alone crimes.
