I have purchased a new exhaust for my hornet, what would be suitable for making a temporary exhaust gasket, i have been to my main dealer and ordered a gasket for it. but was wondering if it would be safe to make a gasket out of something to get the pipe fixed up.

If you have some chimney sealant (putty), you could use it. Definitely DO NOT use silicone. Thumbs Up

Tin foil and gun gum will work for a while. Also used old pie tins rolled up for header gaskets which lasted 2 years with no trouble.

Self adhesive foil tape for extractor ducting also works well

The tin foil is gonna burn out in couple of minutes while the engine idles. Thumbs Up

Ever used it? I know of someone who has done considerable mileage with an exhaust bandaged together with tin foil.

If you mean this, then yes.

If you have to ride TBH I probably just wouldn't use anything. Fit it without a gasket and and ride.

Why not?

Use silicone. Ordinary, general purpose plumbers silicone. Clag on loads of it.

I use silicone in that application on my own bike. You will need to allow time for it to dry before starting the engine.

Has the added advantage that it's really easy to remove when you want to fit the correct gasket.

Don't silicone [...] don't use tin foil

I can confirm that both of those have worked for me in the past as temporary bodges may have sold the GPz305 with silicone still in it.

I'm not talking about wrapping tin foil around the joint, I mean folding it into a narrow concertina and then using it inside the joint instead of a proper crush gasket.

Can you expand on your personal experience of them not working?

I just hate silicone. Thumbs Up

So far, I found this (did not work at all):
https://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/RhynoCZ/ZX7R/DSC_0084_zpse495276b.jpg

And this, which was funny, because it started to leak the day I was just about to sell the bike (NC27), it even clogged the jet:https://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/RhynoCZ/Image0746_zps5ccc6660.jpg

AND, the clutch cover on the ZX7R also seems to be sealed with silicone. Mad

EDIT: Also, the funny thing is, that proper seals are cheap, I just don't get it, why would anyone use silicone instead of proper seal. The ZXR didn't even have the seal that goes under the oil cap, oil was just dripping down the clutch cover. It's a simple cheap rubber ring ffs. Rolling Eyes

My exhaust never gets all that hot (CBR600FW) so when I want to swap exhaust for the day for MOT and what not I use a cereal box. Cut into strips and wrap. Doesn't seem to burn or anything for me, all it does is create a nice seal. Mr. Green

You can also get high temperature silicone specifically designed to seal stove flues. Thumbs Up

Wrong silicone, it's not the stuff I'm on about.

That's horribly badly applied RTV compound (which is silicone based). I've seen worse. I'll see your carb gasket and raise you one rocker box (yes, oilways).

I'm talking about the clear stuff you use in a mastic gun to seal round the edges of your bath. A big fat slug of it all the way round then wipe off the excess.

Cheap no-brand bathroom sealant from poundland, dries rock hard, scrapes off easily enough when you need it to but makes for a good gasket Wink

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to work on engines. Imagine you'd buy an aircraft with engine like that. Neutral
