 |
|
I have purchased a new exhaust for my hornet, what would be suitable for making a temporary exhaust gasket, i have been to my main dealer and ordered a gasket for it. but was wondering if it would be safe to make a gasket out of something to get the pipe fixed up.

If you have some chimney sealant (putty), you could use it. Definitely DO NOT use silicone. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

As above.
Have constructed exhaust repairs from both silicone & tin foil without issues.
Would love to hear why it's killing kittens? ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

I just hate silicone.
So far, I found this (did not work at all):
https://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/RhynoCZ/ZX7R/DSC_0084_zpse495276b.jpg
And this, which was funny, because it started to leak the day I was just about to sell the bike (NC27), it even clogged the jet:https://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/RhynoCZ/Image0746_zps5ccc6660.jpg
AND, the clutch cover on the ZX7R also seems to be sealed with silicone.
EDIT: Also, the funny thing is, that proper seals are cheap, I just don't get it, why would anyone use silicone instead of proper seal. The ZXR didn't even have the seal that goes under the oil cap, oil was just dripping down the clutch cover. It's a simple cheap rubber ring ffs. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

My exhaust never gets all that hot (CBR600FW) so when I want to swap exhaust for the day for MOT and what not I use a cereal box. Cut into strips and wrap. Doesn't seem to burn or anything for me, all it does is create a nice seal. ____________________ Willson - "If you go out on that CBR600 in the winter, you're going to do more miles on your side than on your wheels."

You can also get high temperature silicone specifically designed to seal stove flues. |

Wrong silicone, it's not the stuff I'm on about.
That's horribly badly applied RTV compound (which is silicone based). I've seen worse. I'll see your carb gasket and raise you one rocker box (yes, oilways).

I'm talking about the clear stuff you use in a mastic gun to seal round the edges of your bath. A big fat slug of it all the way round then wipe off the excess. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Cheap no-brand bathroom sealant from poundland, dries rock hard, scrapes off easily enough when you need it to but makes for a good gasket |

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to work on engines. Imagine you'd buy an aircraft with engine like that. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ
