After sorting the CBT on Monday, picked this up today on an 09 plate which I think was a good deal. Got a bit of cosmetic rust on the swing arm and reverse of the exhaust and a small hole in the seat which I plan to replace but otherwise a nice little runner. Possible only plans may be a screen but will see how I go.

Just got to go to Bike Stop tomorrow and get all the kit and I'm ready to go, can't wait!

ACF50 if you are going to ride it in this weather. Worth every penny

Getting a screen makes a huge difference. Got mines off ebay via a German company. Fast delivery and a great item.

On another note.

It is well worth replacing the standard tyres. I went for Michelin Pilot Sporty ones. Have run them since last Feb through all weathers 5 days a week commuting. Total confidence in them.

Not sure on the exhaust will check it out. A lot of the other ybrs ive seen have black exhaust with a chrome plate/guard on the front.

What screen would you recommend? Yeah plan to get rid of the rust, wash it, then acf50. Will wait until the monsoon ends.

Also trying to decide what to do for security. Want to order an Almax chain but nothing to put it to yet.. I will have when we redo the garden. Considering putting ground anchor into a brick wall in garden but not sure there is much point for a few months

Get your ground anchor and chain BEFORE you get anything else, otherwise you will look pretty stupid in full bike gear on the bus....

Chains on its way, will just have to wrap it round the bike until i decide about the anchor. It took me 10mins to get the bike down the alley and through the back gate, so i'm going to hear them dragging it out, especially as its under my bedroom window

Got some kit this morning and went out for my first ride this afternoon. Started out round my estate and did a bit of slow manuouvering around a car park and slowly ventured out onto the busier arounds around town… lots of fun. Observations & things to note so far:

* Remember to turn indicator off
* Let off throttle completely when changing gear
* Braver cornering, especially around roundabouts - practice when its dry
* My new gloves aren't warm enough

Checked out the bike a bit more too and there is rust on pretty much all the bolts and on the swing arm, photos below. What would be the best way to get rid of this. Want to give it a proper clean when its dry and put ACF50 all over but wanna remove/paint over all this first.

Also, I can't get the steering lock on. I push the key down as advised but it only turns so far and the key won't release. Only gets as far round as the below… any suggestions?

The rear one is a sporty, the front is a Cheng Shin!?! Is it well worth me swapping out the front or just seeing how I go?

for the steering lock you turn the bars to the left and push the key in and turn to the lock position, if it doesn't go in wiggle the bars a bit till it slips in Thumbs Up

if you look under it you can see the mechanism

Hi
Take rusted fasteners off and either replace or use wire wheel to clean and cover in ACF50, swing arm, remove and strip down and repaint with about 8 coats, I have done this with both my bikes, you will probably find the swing arm bolt is dry as a bone so this is a good time to relube. The rear foot peg carriers are terrible on YBR`s so just sand blast and paint or powder coat.
There is a square box section in the middle of the frame that also likes to rust under the side panels, try and get ACF50 or waxoyl in there, everything on the YBR can be made better with new paint.
As for tyres Sportys all the way, the cheng shin are fine in the dry and death traps in the wet and cold.

Cheers mate. For the swing arm, what do you recommend using for stripping down and the actual paint? Im a complete novice at this! Would you need any primer or laquer? Also any chance any of this could be donn while the swingarm is on the bike, not sure im quite upto stripping it down just yet!

Yeah did have a read of that the other day, nice one. Will give some basic things a try.

If the Sportys are discontinued, are they being replaced by Michelin by anything?

Agreed.

That said, the Pilot Sporty has been discontinued Crying or Very sad

Good little bikes...well, till someone buys it and fills the crankcase of the engine you carefully maintained with metal filings rather than buying new oil Rolling Eyes

There's a link to a servicing and maintinance guide in my profile - should help you out, badly written but hopefully the photo's will make up for what I was trying to describe.

Plenty on ebay still https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xybr+pilot+sporty&_nkw=ybr+pilot+sporty&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Hi
For the swing arm i did this.
Remove rear wheel and shockers and chain guard, then undo the lower bolts on the foot peg hangers and then the swing arm bolt, it will all come apart then so no need to split chain (good time to pop sprocket cover off and give chain a good clean).
Check the pivot bolt is still a good fit in the swing arm if not new bushes needed if good take of the end caps noting how they go on as one is different, then remove the rubber chain guide and the torque arm, now you should have just a steel swing arm.
If you have money to burn then cover bushes and blast if not and you are tight like me its wire wheel on drill and sandpaper, remove all the loose pant and surface rust (you dont need to remove all the good paint) then treat where the surface rust was with jenolite acid a few times till it all looks good and clean, wash down with alcohol or turps to remove last of oil and grease.
Now i used about 3-4 coats of anti rust primer but red oxide will do, then and this is personal choice i used 3 coats of stone chip paint slightly heavier where there will be spray and stones thrown of the wheel. last but not least about 3-4 coats of gloss or semi gloss paint (i use plasticote) and let harden for a couple of days.
the torque arm will most likely be a tighter fit with the extra paint and the little hole where the rubber chain guard goes in will be tight. Wire brush the hangers and repaint then re assemble it all I used moly lube for the pivot bolt, you will benefit from help when rebuilding or get used to using your foot as a hand lol.
This should be good for many years.

Thanks for the info.. all gone way over my head already but will look into how feasable that would be with some assistance.

What sort of paint would you use for the footpegs and other silver paints items like the plate that the pegs bolt onto? that is a bit scuffed up and rusty on the back too. Would you treat that the same way as the swingarm?

Hi
Yes, just sandblast, dip or sand by hand remove any sign of rust then a few coats of primer and a few of paint, if they painted these bikes properly they would look good for a while as it the biggest weak spot paper thin paint. As for paint i find Plasticote fine but you could powdercoat.

I just use what I have, but you can stove enamel, powder coat, professional respray or rattle can, the choice and cost is yours but Ive never had a problem with plasticote paint.
