Posted: 11:57 - 07 Jan 2014 Post subject: Car related Question - ECU Readers |
 |
|
Not really on any car forums, so I reckoned you lot would know
I was thinking about buying one of these cables with the software for my laptop for reading fault codes on my car ECU.
All I have at the moment is a 1996 mk1 Peugeot 106 which often has the engine management light come on. However the reader is something I'd like to have for future cars too as with so many sensors these days it would a lot better to diagnose the fault rather than randomly replace sensors.
I'm feeling its something any home car mechanic should have by reading how people fix various issues on their cars.
Are there any out there for a reasonable price and that are compatible with most vehicles? Also, how on earth do you plug these things in?
Thanks,

I bought a £10 reader off ebay to check for faults on my wifes 2005 ford focus. It worked ok on that, but wouldn't read them on my Discovery but I expect that is because the system is far more complex.
Somewhere on the vehicle there will be a socket which looks like a scart socket on your TV - that is where you plug it in. On the focus and discovery they are in the drivers footwell area - so have a look there |

the hand held unit about 25 works fine
I also have a lead and software from Ebay even cheaper works just fine if a little of a pain to set up

Upon research I would need to buy peugeot specific software and cables for my computer off ebay.
Not going to bother as the bodywork will probably only last one more MOT. Then again they didn't notice the two gaping holes in the wheel arches last time Thank you plastic arch covers ____________________ Honda CG125<Honda CM200< Kwak GT750 (SOLD) < BMW R65 |
