Not really on any car forums, so I reckoned you lot would know Smile

I was thinking about buying one of these cables with the software for my laptop for reading fault codes on my car ECU.

All I have at the moment is a 1996 mk1 Peugeot 106 which often has the engine management light come on. However the reader is something I'd like to have for future cars too as with so many sensors these days it would a lot better to diagnose the fault rather than randomly replace sensors.

I'm feeling its something any home car mechanic should have by reading how people fix various issues on their cars.

Are there any out there for a reasonable price and that are compatible with most vehicles? Also, how on earth do you plug these things in?

Thanks,

von1papen

I bought a £10 reader off ebay to check for faults on my wifes 2005 ford focus. It worked ok on that, but wouldn't read them on my Discovery but I expect that is because the system is far more complex.

Somewhere on the vehicle there will be a socket which looks like a scart socket on your TV - that is where you plug it in. On the focus and discovery they are in the drivers footwell area - so have a look there Thumbs Up

I have a Fuel computer that reads all the shit off the ECU and lets you manage fuel consumption very precisely.

But they cost about £80

Scangauge is the device.

Fits any car with a EOBD OBD2 socket

I'm just after something that can give basic fault codes really, although it looks like my car will need a peugeot 2 pin adapter as it doesn't have an OBD2 socket (possibly).

Waaaaay OFF TOPIC

I wanted a Parrot Handsfree Intercomination Bloootoothed doofur for the Mrs's phone. Not a simple job as the car audio cable can have one of two receptacles.

Parrot are French Phuquers and getting info from the cnuts is a hassle.
So no Parrot yet. Smile

I also have a lead and software from Ebay even cheaper works just fine if a little of a pain to set up

Forget it, your Peugeot at that age is not OBD compliant, only a dedicated tool will read it.

Upon research I would need to buy peugeot specific software and cables for my computer off ebay.

Not going to bother as the bodywork will probably only last one more MOT. Then again they didn't notice the two gaping holes in the wheel arches last time Laughing Thank you plastic arch covers Thumbs Up

The holes will be handy for the recovery vehicle to put a wire rope through to get you home. Thumbs Up

I have mine neatly (read precariously-ish) jammed in the wee cubby under the cabin air controls.
It sets up without too much faph.
I have gauge reading Ave MPG, MPH, Coolant Temp, and Boost.
Then you can display cost per day etc.

After a couple of fills it is surprising how it calculates to about 20p how much the fuel fill cost.

I have a snap-on scanner cost me £3000 + , can view live data and graph each sensor or parameter as it happens, change basic settings and reset fault codes, however, its just another tool in the box ! Basic EOBD will only allow emissions related data and fault code info from 2001, pays your money and takes your choice, stick to old hondas !!!

Generic OBD/OBD2 code readers won't work with Peugeot.

You need to use software called "diagbox" or "Peugeot Planet/Lexia3".

Get onto peugeotforums as there's often people selling the software and cable.

Don't pay more than £80 for peugeot planet.

Kits often come up on eBay as well.
