Mate of mine had one about the same time I had my DC2
Took it up Prescott Hill

IMO too difficult to keep up on cam and far too slow off of it. Handling was pretty good though, despite cheap tyres, and ride comfort / equipment wasn't bad at all - especially compared to the Integra |

Can't comment on owning a Celica, but if that's the 1zzfe engine that's got the same pistons as the 1.8 in the Corolla and Avensis, then watch the engine oil like a hawk. The pistons apparently didn't have enough oil drain holes put in them, so over time oil clogged up and then got past the piston rings.
https://www.toyotanation.com/forum/131-8th-generation-1998-2002/402362-diy-oil-consumption-fix.html
If the 1.8 Celica used different engine internals then you'll hopefully be ok. |

I had one, loved it. Very nice looking car, surprisingly practical (two rear seats, and they fold down for a lot of space), not going to win many races but nice to drive, did a lot of miles in it.
Is that a 51 reg? If it's in good condition, you might be lucky and get £2,000 for it, but it doesn't look like it based on the fact you have the basic spec wheels on suggesting it doesn't have the premium interior either.
The big problem to watch for with the Celicas was the VVTLi engine (different from VVTi) which would 'lift' at high RPMs and give you a VTEC-esque boost. The bolts in the pre-facelift model were dodgy. Something else to watch for is the engine management light. It should come on when you start the car and then go out. If it doesn't even come on, an unscrupulous previous owner may have disconnected it to hide something... ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). What's the crack with the Celeca? Is it a fake sports car, or do people actually consider them sports cars?

For me it's a fake.
Not quite fast enough, not quite sharp enough handling, kinda looks OK, in an anonymous sort of way.
Typical Jap mass market really, slightly more form than function, but not enough of anything to really get the heart racing.
I've always thought of that model as being for women and poseurs, probably not appealing to anyone who knows anything about cars. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I prefer the Hyundai to look at, it's got some nice styling cues, but the handling is extremely sketchy and the engines are woeful.
I find it incredibly difficult to get excited about almost all Jap cars, there's maybe 2 or 3 that I would vaguely consider owning, unless all I wanted was something guaranteed to start every day and get me to work, with no consideration for driving pleasure. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Fake? Better than an Astra or whatever with 'sport trim'. This and the MX-3 were fun sporty coupes, not race cars.
@Binge: How tired does it feel? I test drove a lot of them and some felt extremely shagged out, so I kept shopping and paid a bit more for one with lower mileage that hadn't been ragged every day.
Check everything's condition: those 15 inch alloys were notorious for corroding if not looked after or curbed too many times, make sure they're all sound including the spare. Look for wear or tears in the driver's side interior carpet which tended to suffer. Take it for a decent spin on a dual carriageway and see how it accelerates to a high RPM.
The leather ups your price a bit, does it have the navigation system or a storage compartment? CD changer and/or optional sub in the back? ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Currently bikeless

I think I'd rather have the Astra, they will do 200K+ and I wouldn't have to worry about wonky wheels, buggered engines and threadbare carpets, plus it would be just as fast, handle just as well and I could get two full sized adults in the back, not just a couple of kids or some lower body amputees.
And don't start with the MX3, that's about as fake a sports car as the Japs ever produced, it's right up there with Tesco value baked beans and Bangkok ladyboys. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I really like these. Bit girly but I do not mind that.

I had one just like that for 2 years.
Reasonably practical, the boot was a pain, it's long and wide but because of the shape of the rear boot lid you can't get anything tall in it! not very quick, handles well, and looks better than you average hatchback etc
I sold it for 2 reasons. First one was there was a grating noise coming from the rear brakes, which no matter how many times I took them apart, cleaned them and rebuilt them I couldn't get rid of. Which was a massive pain in the arse.
Second I decided to get a 350z
Celica was alright, but I prefered the Mk2 MR2 I had years before it. ____________________ Bike - 2003 Kawasaki ZX6R 636 Ninja (A1P) |

Which ones have you tried? There are some amazing cars you're dismissing there really. |
Probably easier to compile a list of ones I haven't driven.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of Jap cars that do a few things very well, but they often fail in the crucial area of providing driving pleasure, largely due to them engineering out any character.
I find them deeply uninspiring and not the kind of thing that makes me want to go for a drive, just for the sake of it. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........
